I agree. It is a great movie at $7 less that Amazon. BUT I that is almost the price I paid for the LOTR extended trilogy.

I loved the movie since it came out (it took a lot more from Gibson than Dick, really, and was the first to introduce several themes that have since become mainstream, and then cliches) and have probably had one or two versions in VHS, DVD, and now Blu. I would never minimize its importance or impact, but IMHO you'd have to be pretty seriously obsessed with the one film for $43 bucks to seem reasonable... and are they going to play the customers along for a dozen versions? There are limits.

I'd look for these to be remaindered for a lot less in a few months.

I have the five disc set from the SD a couple of years ago - but that was under $20. I would consider this and the Alien Anthology 6 disc set the best values for movie extras, if you enjoyed the movies in question, and like having the back story. Both productions were cutting edge for their time, and came very close to not being made at all, and disaster once production began. Blade Runner is seminal SF movie, and one of my favorites - but it's still not worth $43 to me.

Actually reference Gibson you have it backwards - Balderunner came out in 1982. Gibson published Neuromancer in 1984, and you might argue he successfully transferred the SF Noir of Bladerunner and other rundown future dystopias to the more modern concepts of cyber reality and the technological backbone implicit to that. Now The Matrix is highly derivative of Gibson's work.

Neuromancer was Gibson's first novel, but the first "sprawl" stories, the ones reprinted in the collection Burning Chrome, came out earlier, the story Burning Chrome in 1982 and Johnny Mnemonic in 1981... Gibson acknowledges being inspired by Escape from New York (1981, notable for, among other things [well, Adrienne Barbeau, at least] using physical wire-frame models to simulate a computer simulation, the budget not allowing for a "real" computer "wire-frame" model... an interesting recursion, simulating simulation), so some of the themes were already floating around, Gibson's work being part of that mix, before Blade Runner was released.

The big missing element before Neuromancer was the concept of "cyberspace", but Blade Runner didn't touch on that.

I ran a "Computer Bulletin Board System" (BBS) in the '80s called The Gentleman Loser, from a 6-foot-long desk with four computers on it... all 8088 machines, and one 1,200 BPS modem. And... you feel old? Wink

I don't think the "hate" is directed at the vendor for the price, it seems to me that it's directed at the studios who release version after version after version, and seem to think that some paper folders and one or two cutting-room-floor "extras" that haven't been seen before add $25 of "collector value" to an item. The very word "collector" should be at least a red flag now, it's almost a euphemism for rip-off. You keep trying to drink from that firehose and they'll keep churning the junk out, no problem. There's a problem with letting the manufacturer determine what has value instead of the customer.. if you don't see that, well, best of luck...

The last time Blade Runner had a collectible release was 5 years ago and it was more expensive than this. Some people are just now entering the Blu-ray market. Why shouldn't they get a crack at a lower priced product with some "fun" extras? No one is putting a gun to anyone's head to buy this. And there are two other less expensive ways to view Blade Runner on Blu-ray: a $14 single disc set or a $25 4 disc set with all of the content but without the extra ship and other junk.
