haha Roads are hard to keep and maintain. But most are not designed the way you're taught. That's so they can have a job every year. That is one thing i learned when doing an internship for NYC DCP(Deparment of City Planning). I bet you know why concrete sidewalks have "lines" every 4-ft for a perfect square besides aesthetics(hint: cracks). |

I am not a civil engineer but dr.sketch seems to have specific knowledge on how road crews work so was curious if he was in the field. My dad is a civil engineer and he used to go on and on when we used to go on road trips.

Most sidewalks are typically not perfect squares and those lines are called contraction joints. All concrete will crack, the trick is to get the concrete to crack where you want it to. BTW contraction joints aren't always just for aesthetics. I find the rest of your claims to be dubious at best. I am unaware of any engineer that would purposely design a roadway with a life of 1 year (outside some extreme cases) unless told to do so. What I do that is more common, is that the beancounters refuse to spend the money on doing it properly and want the cheapest comestic solution. |

Getting natural resources is a legit reason to go to war though. And fortunately, I believe that our grandchildren will figure out a way to pay off Obama and Bush's debt as well as power their Deloreans. The truth: Management at IRS can blame themselves and how they have chaotic and poor management, but God-forbid you, or I, or anybody else in America gets audited and doesn't have their ducks in order and s***-together, your ass is going to court or jail.

Nope. I've read history books. Japan is great at making the batteries that power our wonderful electric and hybrid vehicles. I would like to see them do it using their own natural resources. ![]() I also don't live in 21st century liberal-ville where everything is just roses and flowers and everybody loves each other. A lot of people would love to see the American people raped, tortured and death through chemical weapons. Last edited by Hawk2007; 10-22-2012 at 07:55 AM.. |

Is it truly "greener" , in your lifetime, to buy an electric, hybrid or 40+ MPG vehicle versus restoring an existing vehicle?
I think the answer might surprise you. I also think the new technologies are great advancements. But don't kid yourself into thinking you are being as green as they say.

For example. My rates (Schedule DR) as a SDG&E customer are on average 20 cents/kw above the baseline and I'd say that well over half of my use is above baseline. NOW, if I have an EV in the house that puts me on to the EV-TOU-2 schedule with rates in the 9.5 -> 9.9 cents/kw, regardless of usage. Sooooooo, just by switching schedules and not ever charging my EV I'd save probably about $50-$70 a month because of the lower electricity rates. I'd be willing to bet that would offset the electricity costs most EV owners would incur. I initially looked in to it as the Prius plug-in allows people in CA to drive in the carpool lane as a single person which would make it so my wife didn't have to take a toll road to work which costs $12/day but this sweetened the deal. So, factoring in the gas savings, toll savings, and electricity bill savings the car itself may be quite financially justifiable. Any CPAs here? For the federal/state EV tax rebate I read that you actually have to owe the gov't $ in order to benefit from it. May seem like a dumb question but does that mean that at the end of the year you have to have a net liability or just that you paid atleast that much in taxes? For example, if my tax withholdings were $20k and the amount I actually owed after everything was calculated was $13k (meaning I would get a refund of $7k), would I get the EV rebate on top of that??? I think so, but the wording is kind of strange. They almost make it sound like you have to actually owe them $ at the end of the year, that your witholding was less then your total tax bill but I can't see that as being right as that wasn't the case when I did the home energy efficiency (window replacement) credit. Per them"For personal use vehicles, the Plug-in vehicle tax credit is treated as a nonrefundable personal credit and is limited by the taxpayer's amount of tax liability for the year the car is placed in service."
