Myth: Synthetic motor oils are man-made in a laboratory.

Reality: Synthetic motor oils use crude oils extracted from the earth which go through a synthesis process and use man-made additives in the creation of a final product.

Myth: Synthetic oils are too thin, creating blow-by and oil burn-off in older cars.

Reality: Just like conventional motor oil, synthetic oils have a specific viscosity grade. However, synthetic motor oil contains extra lubrication additives to make the oil stronger and provide higher heat dissipation. Synthetic oils do not affect seals and will not be the cause of blow-by or oil burn off in an older engine.

Myth: Once your engine gets a taste of synthetic motor oil, there's no going back to conventional oil.

Reality: Synthetic and conventional oils are compatible - It is not harmful if you decide to switch.

Myth: There is not any real difference between conventional and synthetic motor oil.

Reality: There are not any real differences in the basestocks used to make synthetic and conventional oils, but there are differences in the additives and process used to make the final products.

Myth: Synthetic motor oil will ruin the seals in older vehicles and cause leaks.

Reality: Synthetic motor oil does not cause leaks. It is 100% compatible with all automotive seal and gasket materials.

not to start any kind of debate but is it ok to go from Mobil1 Extended Performance to this stuff and then back to the Mobil 1? Or should I just stick with Mobil1 EP?

I would suggest you buy it 3 times - this is probably the best price I have seen on RP since I have been looking at motor oil prices.

Wish I had a Pepboys closer - for this price I'd switch back to Royal Purple from my current Redline usage. While my research indicates Redline>Royal Purple - you REALLY can't beat this price!

That is freaking cheap. I usually stick with one brand for the life of the car.

Is this for synthetic or regular, or does it not matter? I've never bought RP before

Royal purple is synthetic. If you have a decent amount of miles, guessing 40k+, you shouldn't go synthetic for risk of oil leaks is what I think. I don't drive hard so I just use conventional oil anyway. I change more frequently though. Synthetic can go up to 10k miles per oil change with a filter change at 5k.
Well this info is what I recollect from years ago. Perhaps things have changed because I haven't kept up since I don't use it.
