Is the 40mm lens better than the 50mm f/1.8 (for portraits and low light), despite the wider aperature on the 50mm?
Also, does STM matter at all for photos? Or is it only an enhancement for videos? |

I have the T4i, consider myself one step before pro photographer. I bought it with the 18-55 and returned that to get the 18-135 stm lens. It is amazing! I shoot concert videos and see that many people have used it for some hardcore video efforts. The STM lenses are quiet and fast which is critical for video, and the image quality is unlike anything i have seen. It has the features of many of the $2000 models, for a fraction of the price. I will just buy the pancake 40 mm on my own for $200 or less from Amazon or whoever offers it cheap when I am ready. With a camera with this kind of power I should think one would want a lens that utilizes all of the features and I have seen many amazing deals on each of the kits available which do not require a rebate. If you want to see my videos I shot (which was literally the first time i used the camera) let me know and I will send you my youtube link.

Please be warned about the Canon rebates. They are painfully slow. I was scared that my 400 bucks vanished into thin air but luckily got them a few days ago. Btw, I submitted the rebate for my T3i in June.
Also, make sure that you cut the full thickness of the box - not just peel the sticker off. Despite all these, I know a bunch of folks who were unfortunate not to receive their rebates. The ACB promotions ( not Canon.com ) is the company that manages these rebates and they have a horrible customer support. If the rebate goes through nicely, these camera deals are insane. |

I'm trying to talk myself out of this, but while I'm on this thread, I suppose I should also mention that there's reliable 5% cashback on Adorama, and another 5% for the discover card, so you can knock another $108 off the total.
$1080 - $400 - $54 -$54 - $100 (printer) - $20 (paper) - $50 (Photoshop/Premiere) = $402 for body/lens after some hassle. |

So you are good to go. Would it be wrong for Ryan Bader to have the nickname "Master"? Or, how about Frank "M.I.R." Mir?

But from the reviews (dpreview), it seems the autofocus is quite a bit slower in liveview. And I'm not sure if it's more error-prone. Slower might be OK, but error prone focus is definitely a deal killer. I'm guessing that'll be fixed at some point. Sony does a great job with combination phase-contrast detect focus mechanism. Canon should be able to do the same. So, I'm holding off on the T4i. |
