I'm looking for a slide scanner that I can change how bright the slide is scanned in. The slides I'm working on, I can see the image looking at the slide but when I put them in the 21c (that's on the top of the slide scanner i have) the image shows white. and alot of them are very washed out. I can't use an after the fact picture correcting software because it just sees a white image. I've searched on amazon but I can't find one that you can dim the exposure or atleast i can't tell if you can. I saw alot of slide scanners for under $100 on there but I'm not sure what's what. I'm scanning in old slides of my dads pictures of vietnam. so I want them to turn out good for him to take to his reunion. Any help would be appreciated.
None of the mainstream photography companies make dedicated slide/film scanners any more, because flatbed scanners have gotten so good. The current price/performance golden boys, if you're willing to either wait for sales or increase your budget, are the Canon 9000f and Epson V500. They're nearly identical devices, I just bought the Canon because it was on sale at the time for $110.
Advantages of those two scanners:
-Made for scanning film/slide. Have multi-holders, so that you're scanning multiple images at once.
-LED lamps, so you have even illumination, plus no warm-up time
-My 9000f allows me to individually adjust the brightness of each slide when importing. I scan in as TIFF, then use either Lightroom or Photoshop to do my image editing, as if they were originally digital photos.
-FARE/ICE technology that removes dust and scratches from the photos. Huge time saver.
