I have a 17 year old Amana washing machine that works well, albeit it has a long washing cycle and a 40 year old GE dryer that works well with the exception of a timer that works haphazardly (no replacement part available). Would a new top loading basic washer/dryer perform better than these old machines and be more energy efficient?
Front load washers have longer cycle times than top loaders, so you probably aren't going to see a difference there. (Took me an hour+ to wash a small amount of clothes with minimal options 'checked off' on a friend's GE frontloader). Wll you save energy? Sure. Will they last 40 years? Definitely not. 17 years? Hah. maybe half of that.
My theory is, the simpler, the better when it comes to appliances. Too bad even the cheap low-end models are beginning to get electronics thrown in them as well, where they really aren't needed.
Honestly, I think the LG washer for $599 is excellent. I had a year of experience using stacked LG front loaders while living in an apartment (Crazy building owners had FREE laundry with two beautiful LG machines... until the building was sold). They were amazing machines...
I just bought an apartment building, and I don't want to use the coin-op washer that's available for my tenants... I've been eyeballing the LG WM2250CW for a few weeks now, and it's been pretty consistently at $799 (Home Depot), $720 (at a local appliance place). BUT, Home Depot has had it for sale recently for $720 AND they have free delivery...
NOW they have it on sale for $599!! I'm totally going for it!! I was considering getting the next model up ($899), but when I compared the PDF spec sheets for the two, the differences are very minor and not enough for me (personally) to justify the extra $100 at normal retail price, and now of course the difference is $300 since HD has dropped the price...!!
I must be missing the LG $599 deal, this is $599 each correct?
