Just found out that Sony USA is offering double the value for its Trade-in and Recycling Program. Helpful especially for those of us thinking of trading in an old laptop (several brands are available for trading in but I didn't find Asus among them) for a new and shiny Vaio.

http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/...Id=tradeup

Is it possible to score a 1st gen i5 for less than $200 to use as a trade in? Hehe. Smilie

I plug these into the drop down lists:

Intel i5
2.26 GHz
Gateway/Acer
Is Hard Drive present? Y
Is the pc fully functional? Y
Is the computer in good physical condition? Y
Is Operating Software Restore Disc Included? N (usually on the hard drive)
Do you have the power cord? Y

And I get an end value of $336, not too shabby at all, especially if 1st gen i5's can be had for $200 or so.

Updating it to an i7, 2.66 GHz (just guessing if there is such a speed), with all else being equal, I get a $468 trade in value. Smilie

-----
I found out after posting that the Core 2 Duo trade ins are the best bang for the buck, especially when they are selling for $100-150 on Kijiji or CL and can fetch almost $300 in trade in value. Smilie

Sony B&M Store is giving away 2 free movie tickets to Skyfall when you take a 5 min demo of their new 84" 4k TV in store.
They give out vouchers for Hollywood movie money which you redeem online for Skyfall tickets.
Got mine over the weekend.

Didn't see it posted anywhere in the store. I came to know about it during a commercial that comes before they screen a movie at Edwards theaters.

Offer valid while supplies last.
Limited 2 tickets per group.

The best link I could find about information regarding this offer is here [sony.com]

Catch a Breathtaking Double Feature
Date: October 15 thru November 12

Visit the Sony store to catch this year's must-sees. Ask a sales associate to give you a demo of the brand new 84" 4K TV, Sony's largest and highest resolution TV ever. Once you've seen our groundbreaking television, you will receive two James Bond Hollywood Movie Money® codes with instructions to print your Skyfall tickets at home.

I'm guessing the offer is valid only at those stores that carry the 84" 4K TV

Here are the locations that carry it.

Exclusively at select Sony Stores:
Los Angeles, CA 90067
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Offer expires 11/17 for all sony store in CA, just called to confirm. Was going to trade tomorrowFrown

To the best of my knowledge, this ends 11/15.
EDIT: Just called my local Sony store (NJ) and they said this program will be running through Nov. 21 -- not sure if this applies nationwide or for this particular store only

Some helpful additional details on the program:

i just called the stony store to verify. They are giving the double credit for the purchase of a windows 8 new laptop. I specifically asked if i could trade in multiple laptops on the purchase of one laptop and they said yes. They have there touch screen desktops with an i7 for 1,300-1,400... I have 3 core duo laptops that work 2-4 years old.... If i can get 700-900 for the three laptops.... i will only be out of pocket about 500-700 dollars... I could also get a decent laptop for free Smilie

Here is my experience...in Edison, NJ...

I had 5 years old HP DV2500 Core 2 Duo, having Negligible physical damage, with Charger, without Recovery Disc, and Fully Operational Laptop...went to Sony store of Menlo Park mall...was evaluated for $242....Customer Rep asked if he wants to order anything, to which I said -- No, I wish to order from Outlet...I received Sony Gift-card that can only be used towards another laptop purchase without any restrictions from where & when...

In short...in-store quick & easy trade-in...online lengthy & blind from you...

Cheers,
~nV!
Updated aka more good news from nV:

Quote from nbvora13 View Post :
The gift-card doesn't have expiration date, and contrary to what customer rep said in the store, this gift-card can also be used to purchase any goods/services from any Sony store, as mentioned on the back of gift-card....

Cheers,

For Californians:
Quote from creuset View Post :
Summary of store attitudes in Bay Area:
Sony Outlet in Gilroy CA: They don't do trade-in assessments. But they do sell refurb Vaios there at great discounted prices. And they said I'd have "no problem going to Stanford or Santa Clara to get a gift card for my used laptops under this promotion."

Sony Store at Santa Clara at Valley Fair: No problem. Bring your laptops in, we'll value them. Buy a Windows 8 computer here or online at Sony Outlet or Gilroy Outlet. Ye, very customer service friendly and out to make money for Sony.

Sony Store at Stanford Shopping Center (Palo Alto, CA): Called twice to confirm their policy about taking my laptops down there to be valued for the double credit. The two people (supervisor [female] and senior customer service guy [male]) who answered the phone was insistent that no gift cards would be given for this promotion's credits. So I would NOT be able to go and buy a vaio laptop online, outlet online, or at Gilroy at the outlet store. Double rebate is ONLY good for in-store purchases of a PC. I even told him I thought he was mistaken based on responses in a forum from other stores such as Vegas, etc. He said perhaps his manager who returns on Friday would have the authority to give single credit for sony outlet online.

I hope this helps people somehow. Perhaps avoid the Stanford store? Go to every other Sony store and entity EXCEPT stanford.

Another tip for Californians wanting to go the Stanford location and for everyone that in-store valuation may yield more than the online valuation

Quote from creuset View Post :
So I ended up going to the Stanford store. The Sony 800 number people assured me that if I had any problems with Stanford being resistant about me getting a trade-in to buy things online (instead of just at the store), I could call the 800 number while at the store, and they would pull rank.

I turned in my laptop. Because it was a MSI (or Other on the trade in website), instead of getting $170, I got $307 in person. The salesperson there was nice enough and gave me my voucher paperwork, but neglected to give me my gift card. That's what you need to buy online or at any other store. The papers are only for the recycling part.

Next morning, back home, as I'm trying to complete my order online, I'm trying to use the paper voucher number to complete my beautifully set up purchase. The phone people ask, "where's your gift card? the store is supposed to give you one of those." The Stanford store was either forgetful or just manipulative/controlling. The Stanford store insisted I drive down 40 miles again to pick up the card in person and complete the online purchase in their store. That just seems heavy handed to complete online purchase. The Sony 800 number people called the store and told them they are being ridiculous and need to release the gift card to me over the phone--esp as it was their error in not giving it to me while I was in the store. Nightmare. Supposedly someone will call me later today from the store to fix things. Ugh. I just want to buy my sony product.

And to add on top of that the vaio outlet 50% code is temporarily disabled while I'm trying to work around the Stanford store's greed... I know I'm whining.

But lessons:
* Sometimes going in person can result in more trade in--esp for a computer not listed on the rebate website
* Recovery discs are worth it to burn (they never even verified my recovery discs) and turn in
* Make sure you get the gift cards, not just the paper vouchers
Just went to Sony store at Tysons Corner 1 in VA
They will take trade in old laptop but i have to make a purchase in store . They don't giving out credit. They only allow trade in then buy some thing else in store only

Update from Sony store at Tysons Corner 1 in VA
Just got back with gift card for recycled laptop. No questions asked. Got too skyfall ticket vouchers too..

no way. my laptop has Intel Celeron M 1.6ghz with all the things checked YES. it's good for a free recycle only. no value.
Then they shouldn't have intel atom as a processor selection, I can't think of any notebook that use that cpu.

Thinking of trading a dell xps l502x from last year. While I think it can hang for 1-3 more years performance-wise, I don't actually bring it outside the house. It's quite heavy and I'm looking to buy an ultrabook/hybrid touchscreen notebook.

i7-2630qm
6gb
640GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I have a crappy 160GB drive that I can swap... They don't care about the specs on the HDD, right?

nvidia 525m

Valued at $498. Seems very tempting.

I guess the catch is that you must use the gift card at one of their extremely overpriced stores

I remember the Sony old-laptop rebate program from years ago - got my wife a pretty decent deal trading in her old VAIO Z. That one, though, you just had to find an "eligible retailer" to buy it from - it didn't have to be out of Sony's store. Much better shopping around...

I think it is probably decent if you bought a bottom of the line laptop but seems pretty low if you bought anything higher end. Said my vaio was worth $146. That is a laptop with a blu-ray burner in it. I'm better off keeping the laptop to burn blu-rays than to trade it in.
