This was released at around the same time as the T4i. Its super quiet AF is great for videos. That's the main reason it's mentioned with the T4i a lot I believe.

STM stands for stepping motor, which is a canon body attribute. It supposedly allows for silent continuous auto-focus when recording videos. My t4i and pancake lens will arriving on monday, so I'll be able to test it out then.

anyone who asking if this worth over 50mm 1.8, buy it and shoot with it and see which one you like better, some prefer 40mm some prefer 50mm, both are excellent IQ. If you don't need either one, sell it.

Great deal. I just paid $175 shipped for a second-hand (new condition) one a few days ago and was pleased with the deal.

I am afraid to buy any new Canon DSLR kits, lenses, flashes, or bodies because as soon as I do the next day a better deal pops up. Crazy how fast and low prices are dropping on Canon camera items.

I don't have a Canon but I'm tempted to get this and a T4i in the near future.

You dont need it, you have a lot in that range already; the 50mm and 60mm are very close in FL as well.

For those wanting a comparison between this and the Nifty Fifty (50 1.8), here's my take. The nifty is a steal for how well it performs at 1.8. It has great performance. It is seriously lacking in build quality though, and sometimes the front AF ring falls off. 40mm will be a bit wider, and you are losing quite a bit of light going from 1.8 to 2.8. The background of your pictures when the lens is wide open won't be as creamy smooth with the 40. The real perk of the 40 here is the size. It is amazingly compact. The 50 is small and light, but the 40 even more so. I just got the 50 when it was on sale for 75, but I am still going to pick up the 40 because the extremely small size. Do I really need it? No. I have a 17-50 with a constant aperture of 2.8, so that focal length is covered as well as the aperture. But for the price of $150, it is pretty hard to turn down.

Seems nice, I had to stop following the Canon gadgets for a year, and never heard of this lens. How is it compared to the 50mm 1.4?
