The first season of Rome was absolutely amazing, the second season was good but by the time they were ready to shoot HBO had cancelled the series, forcing the cast, writers and production to shorten the script and close out the series after the second season.
This is an amazing series and if it would have run the full gamut, would have gone down as the best series ever from HBO bar none, imho. |

2 seasons only?
-The San Francisco Bay Area, commonly known as the Bay Area, is a metropolitan region that surrounds the San Francisco bay in Northern California.
-The Bay Area is home to approximately 7.2 million people. -The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the wealthiest regions in the U.S. |

Yep they announced they would cancel after the second season. It took off after the DVD/Stream/Bluray of the first season was available, that was when it had it's second wind. But unfortunately, HBO had to pull the plug because the ratings weren't' high enough in the first season. After the plug was pulled, writers, directors, actors went their separate ways and HBO couldn't proceed with a third season even if they wanted to. The real sad point of this all was that it was probably going to be the best show on tv for many years to come but initially the studio gambled 100 million and lost because they didn't want to lose out on more money if it were to fail further. |

I know its subjective, but Rome is the best TV series I've seen. Lots of other great shows have been/are being made, but if I had to pick a favorite, its Rome for me.
Its just such a shame this show got knee capped by HBO while the 1st season was still in the middle of airing. Some didn't think the 2nd season flowed as well as the first. There is a reason for that. The show creators originally envisioned a 5 season story arc, but that plan was blown to pieces when HBO made the decision green light a 2nd season, but effectively abort the show once that was completed . So the creaters decided to cram the stories of the planned season 2 and 3 into Rome's final season. Originally, Season 2 was to conclude with the Battle of Phillipi. Season 3 was to be dedicated to Mark Antony's time in Egypt with Cleopatra, and finish up with the Battle of Actium. With Octavian's/Agustus power secured, the storyline in S04 was to shift some toward Jerusalem.(this is where the whole Timon storyline was headed) Since King Herrod sided with Antony in Rome's most recent civil war, we would have got to see him kiss major Octavian ass to remain in power. Additionally, Pullo and Vorenus were set to smuggle Cesaerian into Jeruselum. There, his identity would have been changed, and he was to become the young(you guessed it) Jesus Christ. Yes, it would really deviated from history enormously, but man, talk about EPIC! Sure would have pissed off a shit ton of people too! Season 5 would have carried forward through the life of Jesus with Roman take on events during that time. |

It is a full story arc wrapped up fine. Yes it was compressed, but over the course of the entire second season. the narrative didnt suffer and was completed. Why was it cancelled? because although popular it cost a fortune. Probably 20x per episode of a show like dexter costs. Dexter, while well written and acted, has about $5 in sets, costumes and extras. Rome had massive costs.. Rome was without a doubt the best series in decades. Top notch dialogue and acting. |
