Large dark shadow on LCD screen -- UPDATED: now with pics

bonkman 28,625 1,901 October 28, 2012 at 07:01 AM
Just bought a monitor off ebay for my MAME cabinet. plugged it in and there's a giant dark spot on one side of the screen. It's not too noticeable when colors are present (which will be most of the time, except when I'm playing old monochrome games), but it's awful on lighter screens. Anybody have and ideas on how to fix this (or if it's possible). I've googled for awhile but have found literally two dozen different things to try or do, some which sound legit and others which sound like snake oil -- or even making things worse. Plus, a bunch of "you're screwed -- throw it out."

I don't care about the thumbprint bruises towards the center. (though if you know a way to fix that, that'd be awesome, too). It's the spot on the right side.

pics are posted. I think it's easier to see in the thumbnails than in the full size, actually.

No clue what it is, but I would send it back/ask for a refund since you paid for it and I am going to assume it was not advertised this way.

already contacted seller. Will see what happens. Mostly, I don't want to give up the giant screen as I got a good deal on it. Once the hurricane is over, I'm going to test it with some MAME games and see if I can live with it if I can't get a replacement.

Looks like it got squished. Did you have something below the screen like a pillow while mounting the base?

The base apparently got cracked during shipping. I have the monitor just leaning against the wall ATM.

Any way to fix that? I've seen people claim that playing certain movies could indeed do so. BS?

Ah makes sense. The base likely cracked from too much pressure on it which also meant it probably squished into the screen. Sometimes this causes the screen to be darker, other times it becomes lighter. Nothing will fix it. I did it to my first laptop the first week i had it (paid $2200 for it too :/) Sucks but hopefully you can get your money back.

I had some Samsung 305T+ monitors that exhibited this issue. Don't know how it got there as the monitors that exhibited this issue were RMA monitors from Samsung, but it was replaced several times via Samsung warranty - several of the replacements had the same issue as well.

It's not fixable as far as I know. Definitely a hardware defect.

Thanks everyone. Trying to work it out with the sender. Ticks me off, since it's not too easy to find 4:3 monitors anymore. My MAME cabinet only has limited space, so I can't just install some giant LCD. I might be able to squeeze a 24" 16:10 in there, but those tend to be wicked expensive.
