I had both and would definitely recommend the D5100 if you shoot landscapes in RAW and do a lot of post-processing. The D5100 captures more information at low ISOs which means you can push shadows further. If you're just taking snapshots in JPEG though, the difference is not huge IMO.

Other than that the benefits are mainly the swivel screen and the IR sensor (can use a remote), and a few more 'creative' filters in the software.

The included lens is actually pretty good, esp. at the wide end. I didn't like it so much at the long end (slow aperture and a little soft). I would probably invest in a 35 1.8G lens as well to really make the DSLR experience more fun.

I bought the Sony Nex-5n for my daughter's upcoming birthday (she has an interest in photog) at around this price -- is this better? Or are they different beasts entirely?

They actually share the same sensor so image quality is similar. The NEX-5N wins on portability and the D5100 wins on autofocus ability.

Yes, the linked lens will work fine with the D5100 - they are both DX format, so there will be no surprises in performance or operation.

I would recommend having a UV filter for every lens. More than anything, it keeps your fingers and dirt off the glass.... it is easier to clean (and if needed, replace) a dirty UV filter. And finding that your lens glass is scratch will simply ruin your day.
Besides... filters are cheap.
