Exactly, because their pricing model makes far more sense. They could have priced the D800 far higher, but chose not to.

Based on the current spec, and unless there's some huge surprise, I fail to see how Canon's upcoming 6D will hold its price either. Some will buy upon release for $2100, but when compared to a $2100 D600 or a $2800 5D3, the 6D @ $2100 will be a tough sell.

Who wants a 75MB RAW file?
People who think bazzillion megapixels will make someone's photography better. I'll stick with my 5D3, thank you. If you can't afford it, then might as well find a cheaper hobby.

So right now the 5D3 is priced comparably to the D800, with the D800 still appearing to be more appealing for those that aren't "locked" into a brand (if you're looking at 5D3s and D800s, you're likely locked into Canon or Nikon i'm betting).

I still think it might break $2500 as a DoD, but not sure if it will happen before xmas. Canon just had miserable numbers, so I imagine they'd want better numbers moving forward. Since they've likely sold as many as they could at $3500, i'd guess they'll keep dropping the price to keep sales up.

Although their behavior is frustrating (releasing a $3500 body, then dropping the price significantly several months later, discontinuing 24-70mm and replacing it with a far more expensive 24-70mm II only to have a rumored 24-70mm IS seem likely, at which point the 24-70mm II may drop in price). I'm thinking of switching sides not because of picture quality, but more because of Canon's marketing/pricing tactics. Price the product competitively upon release and it will sell well without much fluctuation. D800 is a great example of this, as I don't believe we've seen ANY deals since it's original release.

um. it's actually because they're cracking down on unauthorized discounts. and they will no longer sell parts anymore.

If you want smaller files, you can always shoot at lower resolution with the D800. But it is there when you need it. You're sticking with your 5D3 because you're stuck with it, because you bought at a higher price and you're looking for justification.

No need to call me a Nikon troll, because I have 2 Canon bodies and 3 L lenses. And yes, I'm stuck with all my Canon gear as well. That's life.

D800 is more appealing only if you like a green tint on your photos.

2 bodies and 3 L lenses? I currently have 2 bodies and 8 L lenses (peaked at 4 bodies and 14 L lenses at the same time - owned more than 30 L lenses the past 6 and a half years).

They are trying to hold the price a 2799 quite firmly in about 3 weeks it will drop another $100 or so. If you can wait to save, wait.
