I'll take a look at the thread later. But in your experience, have you been able to pass thru full HD audio from your .mkv files onto the Roku 2 and then to your AVR? Since I used an older pc and converted to an htpc, I wanted to move it back to the office and use 2 media streamers, one for the living room and one for the game room vs having the tower connected to the AVR, which is an eye-sore at the moment But I'm trying to find a not too expensive media streamer to push full hd video and audio from the htpc.
Thanks beestea! It's good to know that Plex doesn't play .iso files. I haven't gotten to that point but I've heard ppl ripping their blurays and them converting to .iso's to cut down on space. I'll probably be needing this in the future for sure. Hopefully by that time Plex does play 3D .iso's.
Honestly, I don't have any experience doing this. I only have the original first gen Roku, and it doesn't support direct play. Plex does play iso locally on your HTPC, but doesn't stream it.
WD TV live is the better media player. It supports DNLA so it can stream video formats directly from your computer/nas without having to transcode like Plex. You don't have to install any media software on your computer. It is however more expensive than this refurbished Roku.
Unfortunately, DLNA isn't 100% compatible with all file types. It doesn't support mkv, although you may be able to hack it to recognize mkv, it probably won't support multiple audio tracks and subtitles.
It sounds like there is some potential for a jailbroken apple TV being able to stream via xbmc, but I'm not familiar with this. It looks like it may be able to read files from a shared location and play on the XBMC on the apple TV. Plex just works for me and my situation. It sounds like it does support direct streaming without transcoding on the new Roku 2 boxes, but I can't really comment on how well that works. Another thing I like is that Plex on the HTPC and the Roku share the same library, so it keeps track of what I've watched and where I've left off on each movie.
