hey guys, so i can't spend $1500 in 3 months on my everyday things w/ a discover card. Can i instead buy $1500 worth of amazon GC with this and get 5% and $200 back?
Yes, that normally works.

Can anyone here point me to a thread or some sort of information about how CC's effect your credit score? For example, according to creditkarma my credit is somewhere around 718. If i apply for this credit card will it decrease my credit score? I read in these CC threads that people get these cards routinely on a yearly basis or something...SD has been amazing for bargin shopping...now I would love to join you veteran SDers who know how to best work the system...can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

I have applied for a few CCs from SD threads. Chase Freedom, BOA, and SONY. Of these 3, only BOA affected my credit score. BOA, $400 cashback back in July, cost me a whopping 9 points.

This should give you an idea. It's always 5%. Categories change each year.

Wow -- did not know that about Discover. I guess if I end up getting this card, I can always use it in conjunction with different cards -- I'd only use this for the 5% categories, and use other cards that earn waaay more than just 0.25% on everything else. Good info, thanks!
Exactly what I do. 5% on back on gas last quarter was nice. 5% back on all my interwebz slickdeals is even better! Sometimes 10% or more if I shop through shopdiscover at certain retailers like circuitcity.

Do you need to "lock" the slider when you apply? I don't think I did when I made the application for the cashback bonus.

I think the difference here is the extra $75 you get back with a very easy qualifier. That makes this a total of $275 cashback compared to say a standard $200 cashback offer from other CCs. Obviously, if you have no way of spending $1500 online in the next couple months then it's no different than other offers and it's up to you which one to apply for.

For the 5% cashback, does paying bills online like my TWC bill count as online purchase?
No, paying for utilities or services does not count as an online purchase. I checked with customer support about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the heads up. They send me a darn snail mail letter every 5 minutes asking me to sign up but wanted to wait for a decent cash bonus. $200 and some online cashback will work. The amazon shipping will be nice as well since I just let my prime expire, although I have amazon giftcard balance so not sure there Smilie
