Two Roundtrip Flights (50k Points) with New Southwest Airlines Premier Credit Card Approval for $2000 Spent Within First 3 Months

When you say closing date, are you referring to the payment due date you see on your online account? If so, that is not the closing date. The closing date is actually about 1 month before the payment due date. For example:

I opened my card on Dec1. The closing date is the 24th of dec and the payment due date for the very first month is Jan 21st. Using my example, if i spent over 2000 right now, my points would post on my southwest account on Dec 24th or 25th. I know this from checking my other southwest card. Points on my other southwest card seems to post on the day of the closing or the day after.

I checked when my 50k bonus hit the very first month and it was about 7 days after closing. Again, YMMV but this was what happened to my one of my cards i opened over a year ago.

So, if the 24th truly is your billing cycle closing date(not your payment due date) then there is a very good chance you will receive the points in 2012. However, as I mentioned, I didn't receive my 50k bonus until 7 days after closing so you are cutting it close.

First of all, the promo is over and you will only get 25k now.

Regardless, say you get approved for the card on monday. That will be Dec. 10th. Your first month cycle will be around 25 days after the the date your card is issued. That will mean there is no way you will have your first month cycle ending this year. Remember that Chase isn't the only giving out these companion passes. It is Southwest, and they will only give credit you the 50k bonus after the end of your first billing cycle. I could be wrong, but I'm almost sure you have zero chance.

If your first card is still in its first month, your best bet is to call up chase and try to move the end of the billing cycle to 2013. That way you can earn the pass in 2013 and enjoy the pass for two years.

I just did this tonight by calling up chase and moving my billing cycle from Dec. 24th to Jan 4th. That's why I'm such an expert now I confused the payment due date with the billing cycle end date.

Hmm you do have a point. That's why I may call back. But again, the CSR's can say anything to get me to apply for a card. (on the phone she mentioned 50k was still an option, but could have been lying) BTW, when did this end? I clicked on the link late last night and the 50000 mile offer was still there. Done from then till now? That downright sucks! If it's over, then getting companion pass is probably over for me. While not the end of the world, missing out on the 50k deal really sucks. May just wait till it comes back next year and hopefully get 50k points.

Can my wife and I combine our points? We each applied for this in the past and got achieved the minimums. We plan to travel with our two kids, each of which has never flown, so I want them to get window seats, and I hear that SW has some type of cattle charge boarding system which includes calling ahead to "check in". If I can make all 4 reservations at once on one bill and one check in and that mess, it would be so much better. According to a FAQ on their site, they say no, but I recall in the past, some have said they have.

Anyone done this?

You cannot combine RR points between two accounts. I have found Southwests' boarding process to actually be faster than most airlines. Here is the link to their process. http://www.southwest.com/html/cus...ng-school/

Yea, gone are the days of getting the bonus on first purchase and I was hoping they bring it back this year. I should have taken the offer last year. They also increase the minimum spend from $1000 early this year to $2000 within 3 months. Sucks! They should've at least waived the 1st year annual fee.

looks like they brought it back.

I don't mind these new rules if it means having these promos vs the crappy 25k ones. I think Chase is getting smarter with these promos. They realize the people who can't get to the 2k limit are probably churners who aren't worth having as customers anyway. Makes it easier to qualify and churn now. With these tougher rules and upfront annual fees, chase probably doesn't care if you churn every year or two.

Just received card today.

Want to confirm that if I start spending towards $2000 but don't hit $2000 until next year I will be fine for companion pass in 2013 and 2014.

Call and find out your "statement close date". Confirm when your first statement will close. It will either be December or January. If its a day in December, start spending the day after the statement close date. If your first statement will close in January, then spend away.

Just an FYI. I called (as was advised) to have my statement closing date changed to JAN 2013 instead of December. They did it for me. I also had them do it for my wife's card. They said they would have to look into it and then call me back. Well I just received my call back. They couldn't change her card statement date but lucky for us the company never charged the card the $3400. Lucky right? Yup, her points will reflect for 2013 since her statement closed before the charge was added. HOWEVER (the rep says) upon further review (scrutiny) was the word she used of my wife's card we re issued her a new Rapid Rewards number because you can't have the same RR number. So.......Doesn't F'ing matter anyways as now she has 50k points on her RR account and I have 50K on mine. Any advice on maybe how to go about calling them and throwing a fit to see if they will change it back, since they originally said it was ok to do and even issued both of our own separate cards with the same RR number on it?

I would just have your wife call back in and say that in looking at your account, you noticed the RR number was wrong. Ask how to go about correcting the wrong RR number and give them your number. I'd say extreme YMMV but it is definitely worth the ask.

Thanks! I will give this a shot. Just really ticks me off that they decided it wasn't right because we asked them to hold the statement so we could easier reach our companion status. I called and even asked if we could put the same RR # down when we apply for separate cards as she never had one and I did and they said YES! Not a problem!
