Figured I'd start a separate thread for the panny plasma's since the HDTV thread seems to be moving more towards a budget HDTV buying guide side and I got tired of reading through a lot of information about westinghouse, proscan and other budget HDTV brands.

I myself am most interested in the GT50 or ST50 models...hoping that the 55 inch GT will go under 1100 or that the 60 inch ST will go below 1000...

Note that Panasonic charges tax to most locales but shipping is free.
EastCoastTvs.com only charges tax to NJ residents.

Do your research on all sellers before placing an order.

If you are a Costco member see post 216 in regards to warranty options and differences from square trade.

As of now all I know is that it will be delivered by Home Direct USA and they will call/email to go over pre delivery instructions. he's what they mention regarding inspection in their email. seems like a pretty standard statement....

"Please carefully inspect the outside of the packaging before our delivery personnel leave your home. If unpacking is part of your service, please be sure to carefully inspect the merchandise as well. It is essential that you indicate any damages to the packaging or items on the delivery paperwork"

Just to follow up on the delivery from Andorama, everything went well but I did have to stay on top of the delivery companies. The timeline was... TV ordered on 11/22 (thanksgiving), TV shipped on 11/26 via Home Direct, TV reached Seattle on 12/6, TV delivered to my home on 12/8.

I did have to stay on top of the local delivery company, they recieved the tv on 12/6 but were not planning on delivering it until 12/11. They were able to deliver on 12/8. If I had not called on 12/6 I would not have gotten it so I'd reccomend staying on top of the Home Direct and your local delivery company.

The TV arrived in perfect condition, It was a little cold, im sure its been in a warehouse and truck so it made sense. The local company brought the tv into the home and moved to my desired location. They did NOT take it out of the box or set up.

Overall I was happy with the process but it did take awhile. I saved $140 in tax by choosing them over Amazon but its i'm sure there is some value to to having amazon deliver in 2 days with white glove delivery and return policy.

Are people that are running the slides for 100 hours leaving their tv on for 100 hours straight or turning off the TV on occasion to give it a break?

I couldnt resist watching the tv but I'm also running the slides over night and when I'm at work, so basically running them for 20 hours, then watching tv for 4 hours in the evening. I figured its better to do this than to not run them at all.

That's what I went with. I finished panel prep last Thursday and enjoyed the heck out of the TV this weekend.

So my 50GT50 just arrived today and I'm thrilled! Threw a few blu-rays add it and it just looks amazing. So glad I went with a Panny plasma. Anyway... I've heard of people calibrating their new TVs to improve image quality. Could someone shed some light on this process and what I would need to do for this? I've looked in the TV's settings and advanced settings but couldn't find anything besides different picture settings(Cinema, Game), and various color settings.

Thanks!

I must have the worst luck with this P60ST50 TV. So the first TV came with a cracked screen. Rejected shipment and the 2nd arrived this past Saturday. Now I'm having issues with the replacement TV. It randomly shuts itself off while in the menuing system. Then the red power LED blinks 7 times. Only way to get the TV back on is to unplug and replug in.

Doing some quick google searching it appears this TV is plagued with the "7 blinks of death".

Thankfully I purchased through Amazon and they are sending yet another replacement (3rd TV now).

Anyone else having defective TV problems?
I got a defective 60ST50 from EPP direct store. TV had 8 lines of fixed pixels (not dead, but of various colors) running horizontally across the screen. Panny direct offered return with money back but no replacement because item is no longer in stock. I asked to talked to manager and was promised that they will try. Got the call yesterday that they are sending a new TV for 'swap' i.e. they'll collect old TV and install new TV. This time they are including white glove to ensure nothing is wrong out of box.

So far so good.

Running slides for the first 100-200 hours ages the panel, which makes it more resistant to burn in/IR and will not require re-calibration later down the road. (Where as if you calibrate it out of the box, it may be inaccurate after the panel ages those couple hundred hours)
Ok, but if you wait with any calibrations, what's really the difference between putting on slides for the first 100-200 hours and just watching movies for the first 100-200 hours? Do the slides somehow improve the panel aging process?

I believe it's because the slides ensure consistency of "exercise" across both color spectrum & screen surface.

Ok thanks, I guess I could buy that theory Smilie
I'm getting the TV delivered tomorrow, so I guess I'll have to do some checking on what/how to do with those slides.. Is there a good link with info on this stuff?

That's the 2011 thread. For those getting an _T50 set, you want the 2012 thread [controlcal.com] instead. Or, going even further, is there some reason that you are sending him to the controlcal forum (which has hardly any activity) instead of the site that is usually given, highdefjunkies.com [highdefjunkies.com]? The latter is way WAY more active discussion.

Also, this is just the procedure (the 'what"), it doesn't actually discuss the "why" (what I think Crabba may also be asking about). For me as well, that is more murky ... D-Nice seems to stress heavily that you should follow his instructions to a T. He almost makes you worry you might make things worse if you don't. That may not have been his intent, but with so many warnings is bold caps, underlined in red text & followed by gobs of explanation points, that's the way it comes off to me.

With the GT you can use the 'THX' modes for bright room or dim room and you should be good, as those are calibrated settings.

I'm waiting on my TC-P50UT50 to be delivered in a few days, and I've seen some posts about using slides and keeping it on 24hrs etc. For a plasma newb what's that all about? What's the point and what do you gain from doing something like that?
ignore the slides. all this work and calculating going into running it for hours on end with no guarantee that it improves visual quality or minimizes risk of burn in. it's a placebo effect if you ask me.
just run the system as normal and avoid black bars and static images for the first month or so.
