If you aren't seeing the Amex option on the dashboard, go into your profile setting and disable the options regarding sharing information with advertisers and marketing companies, it'll show up then.

For those without an Xbox Live account. Each XBOX will allow you to create 4 Xbox Live accounts with 1 month of Xbox Live Gold for each one. So just create a new account, refuse the "go to gold" option, and activate the free 1 month of gold (just go online and cancel the automatic billing). I did this for my wife, even though she will likely keep going beyond the 1 month free trial.
