Thanks for this thread! Hopefully this year, I'll be able to upgrade my 7 year old Toshiba laptop. I'm hoping for some sort of Laptop/Tablet, minimum i5, and I refuse to buy HP (bad experience)

Hello, I am able to shop aafes too. Smilie Most people can't shop there, and that probably is why it hasn't already been mentioned. Anywho, that is not a bad laptop, but the processor is on the weaker side of things. Whats really important for gaming is the processor and graphics card. That laptop has an A4 processor from AMD which is the weakest processor of their A series. Honestly, I'm sure it would smoke my intel laptop from a couple years ago, but if you are looking for a gaming laptop, this will not work for you. You can get better deals on a desktop, but if it must be a laptop, I'd look for an A10 4600m processor, or an i5 or i7 with a discrete graphics card(gtx 650m or better. be careful though, as a higher graphics card number does not necessarily mean better performance)

The A-series processors from amd have dedicated graphics integrated into the cpu core, and thus are referred to as Apus. An apus performance is superior to the integrated graphics offered with intel chips. However, having a dedicated graphics card(gtx650, hd7770, etc...) paired with an i5 or i7 would be superior performance wise, it just comes down to how much you are willing to spend. Computer ram also plays an important part in gaming, but it can be upgraded relatively cheaply after the laptop is purchased. Due to the supply chain of laptops, you are pretty much stuck with the processor/graphics card you purchase on day one for the life of the laptop.

Wow, crazy long post. Anyway, hope this helps. You can read on the internet about graphics cards/processors, etc... to get a better idea of things, but hopefully this helps.
Thanks for the help. Truly appreciated.

these ads suck

you're better off getting something from dell/lenovo outlet.. or if you were lucky enough you would have bought one of those 50% off laptops from the sony outlet

Please include Touch Screen in the description if it has one. I am looking to buy a touchscreen laptop/laptablet in the near future.

i need a programming laptop for college (microsoft office, visual basics, c+,c++, etc.)
would the $299 Dell 14" i3 suffice?
or is it worth dropping a little more money on the envy 14" i7 $630 from best buy?

I saw the ad scan wally world acer $500 ultrabook, anyone else confirm 320gb SSD? Seems too good to be true it comes with a drive that Im assuming is a 7mm 320gb ssd that I dont think Ive ever seen. Now a 320gb 5400 mechanical seems more reasonable, maybe with a small msata ssd boot?

Good catch. Here's the link to the laptop with the same part number:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Acer-Si...m/21317992

I think this might be my winner...but it only has the second gen i3 and has a relatively crappy resolution. You were right, 320 GB mechanical drive with a 20GB SSD. Sleek though.

This is the most decent configuration I have seen so far. Only things lacking are SSD & Blue Ray. I don't care much for Touchscreen.

I can also live without Blue Ray but NEED SSD. I hope something comes along...

Thanks barcode7 for posting this. Repped.Smilie

Thanks HornetNZ for this. Repped Smilie.
You really don't NEED SSD. You will probably get a much lower quality one than you can buy yourself for a higher price. The SSD and Blu-ray drive are 2 things you can easily change/add yourself. The CPU/GPU and motherboard and LCD aren't. It would be nice to get one with a normall HDD honestly. Move the HDD to the optical drive bay with an adapter and buy and external DVD/Blue-ray drive if you need it.

I think I'm leaning towards this one from Staples -
HP Laptop 17.3" Laptop 6GB RAM 500GB Hard Drive Windows 8 Quad Core A8 APU $399.99

It's not on staples.com yet, so hard to decide until I can see more details, but that one has the newest CPU for the price in the 17" class.
