My rebate just got approved. Bought the pads on Dec 28, mailed everything on January 3. Super fast processing!

I'm seeing allot of BAD ADVICE in this thread. While brak epads are easy, there are certain best practices and possible hurdles that no one seems to be mentioning.
If you've never done it before, you'll probably want someone with you who has to guide you, YouTube is nice, but you're at the mercy of the completeness and editing of the video. ·Someone mentioned that the caliper swings up -that's not always the case, you might have to remove it entirely. You might also have to remove the bracket that holds the pads in order to remove the caliper without damaging it. ·You might run into rusty bolts that just don't want to come off, might need seem penetrating oil or even a torch to free them. ·You might get all of the parts removed only to find that the rotors are also damaged and need replacing, which is why you never work on a car while the parts stores are closed. Best practices. ·I've heard mention of jack stands, but youshould never work on a raised car without jack stands in place. You'll need atleast one, but they come in pairs typically. ·Not one 'expert' has mentioned using a disc brake quieting compound, which is standard practice. ·No one mentioned greasing / lubricating the caliper guide pins, which is also standard practice if you're messing around int hat area anyway. ·No one mentions using brake cleaner when the parts come off. ·I don't think I've heard anyone talk about properly torquing the lug nuts when you put the wheel back on...with disc brakes, this is vital as over tightening can directly lead to more brake problems (rotors can warp). I'm sure there are other instances of just plain bad advice or omissions in here that I've missed, but you get the point. It IS easy, but it's also a job you need to understand completely, and having someone around with confidence is a good way to build yours. One last point...Amazon tells me that they don't have any pads that fit my car but the Bosch finder is coming up with part numbers that Amazon has in stock, but their site tells me doesn't fit. any chance you got around to buying the brakes and testing them out? i eventually got around to replace the brakes on my 2010 camry, both front and rear. but now my rear brake squeals when i try to brake them lightly. but when i do it hard, i cant hear anything. by any chance you know anything about it ? |
