lol i completely understand. it's almost impossible to look up info regarding the different models because there's so much conflicting info with these names. but yeah the WDtv live streaming (that's the key word), this device, has that functionality.

Yeah, the stock UI is definitely better than the Live Plus. However, you can install B-Rad firmware on your Live Plus and use Thumbgen to create your moviesheets and get a very nice UI. Below is an older pic of my Live. Still waiting on a sweet deal on the Live Hub tho.

Agree. I have gone through 2 media player already in less than 1-2 years. One was a seagate and the other one i can't seem to remember the brand. also, i can't say that it plays all format. I have some issues with some mkv format that doesn't seem to play. i can't seem to figure that out. they all say .mkv but some won't play right.

I have a Patriot Box Office (PBO) with original firmware.
I had one issue playning MKV via a specific thumbdrive but it plays them with every other thumbdrive.
It plays AVI in preview mode alongside the menu. It wont play MKV in preview mode.
Some say third party software allows more features.

One thing I will tell you is that these devices are silent (minus any attached hard drive noise). My older XBox 360's noise drives me insane!

The XBox 360 is kind of picky about what it will play on it's own, not in a major way, but the WD units will play just about anything. I'm not sure how tversity deals with that.

No. I could be wrong, but I think it's probably due to the lack of popularity in the US. RMVB is much more popular in Asia.

.mkv is only a container, not a format. Take a look at the type of video and specs inside.

Considering picking one up, anyone know if it's easy to play subtitle files on this for mkv's? Specifically a .srt file, i'm assuming just have the mkv and the srt in one folder and it'll read it?

I am in, just saw it outputs DTS.
I KNOW this will work, at least as good as my WDTV Live Plus, as opposed to my last great idea of UG802+...

These stream off a Windows Network share right? Now only if Roku did this it would be a perfect device.

Yes, it will stream off a Windows Network Share, Linux Network Share, Play off a DLNA server.

I'll admit the Roku UI is better than WDTV, but my primary use is to stream from an in home media server, or playback from USB devices.
