Take a pass....Beef Jerky should be under a dollar an ounce to be 'slick'...This stuff (no matter how good it is), is over $2 an oz. I already catch hell from friends at work when I brag about making jerky that only costs me $.65 an oz...They remind me that it's like paying $10.40 a lb. for beef, which I would NEVER do. Feel me?

I'm only letting others know a discounted price that I found. Actually I was thinking of starting to make beef jerky. But I didn't want to invest in the time, in a dehydrator, and in a recipe. Do you use a dehydrator or do you use a grill? Do you have a recipe that you can share with me?

I don't get why beef jerky is so expensive? It is because 1 lb of beef makes 1 oz of beef jerky or something?

I'd advise that you give it a try using your oven first, then if it turn out the way you like it, look for a dehydrator after that.

Recipe....? I find meat marinade at the store and cut it with light soy sauce and even water after that - you can stretch your ingredients that way. The meat should be as lean as possible (it's the fat in meat that makes it go rancid), so I stick with a bottom or top round if the price is right. Don't slice it too thin because it's going to shrink in every direction, so the slices should be a little less than a quarter inch to start. Marinate for several hours to overnight, and then lay the meat on racks, over a cookie sheet with sides, or suspend from skewers on the racks, and put it in the oven. I see that recipes on the internet suggest patting the meat dry after it marinates, but it seems like you'd lose flavor, so just plan on drying it longer. It looks like people suggest many different times and temperatures, so I think you're safe starting at 200° for about 4 hours and check it after that. I've had success putting a damp paper towel into a zip lock bag with jerky that dried too long, so don't worry about messing it up. Adding spices and sugars to it will only make it better, so experiment. My 2¢.
