I upgraded my phone through Sams Club two years ago. I went from an old WM6 Samsung smart phone without a data plan to the Samsung Fascinate on their 96 cent BF deal, got a data plan, and left with a $1.06 missing from my pocket, and a spiffy new phone. Verizon customers need to remember that if they have a grandfathered unlimited data plan that you lose it if you get an upgrade and the phone's price is subsidized. If you have more than one line up for upgrade, you can "Cross Upgrade" where one line gets the upgrade, they remove the phone from that line and give it to you. You get to keep your month to month, as well as your unlimited data plan, and its as if you bought the phone full price, off someone else, found it, or whatever. The other person is stuck to a two year plan with whatever phone they opted to keep, but it's a way to get a nearly free GS3. ... it's what I'm doing, and I'll be selling or trading it because I already have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I use a minimum of 4GB a month, so losing my unlimited data plan is not an option. But seriously, this GS3 sure is sexy! SuD If I tell you that there are a billion stars in the sky, you believe me without question. If I tell you "Wet Paint", you feel compelled to touch it and check for yourself.

Line 1 - Wife's Line 2 - Mine Both lines are up for contract renewal. She upgrades her dumb phone to the smart phone, and gets a data plan. We walk out of the store with a new GS3 for her account, and mine stays with what I have without the upgrade. We call up Verizon, cancel her data plan and put the previous phone on the account... 15 minutes with a data plan should net either a 1 day charge, or zero charge for the plan. Now we have line 1, her phone, with a 2 year contract extension and mine without. I take the phone and place it on my line. Since I didn't purchase the phone at a subsidized rate, I get to keep my unlimited data plan, but got a spiffy new GS3. ... and then I sell or trade it locally on Craigslist. Call me naive, but don't they squawk a bit when you cancel the data plan and their spiffy new phone? Don't they want the subsidized phone back? Or are you allowed to keep the phone because you keep the 2 year contract? Would this work in my case - you said in your case both of your lines were up for renewal - in my case, the line where I want the new phone to end up is not up for renewal.

Still a good deal though. |

You're still on phone contract and paying for that plan. The data is an optional plan that is not under contract. You can add and remove those all day long. If you lost the phone that day, ran it over, dropped it in the drink, had it stolen, etc, they will drop the data plan and not charge you. Only if you terminate your phone number to remove your line will you pay the ETF based on that phone and price. So yes, there is a downside. You need to commit to being with them for 2 more years. The 14 days is to give it back without being charged for the phone if you don't like it for an upgrade, but likely with a restocking fee. Don't forget that there is now a $30 upgrade fee. In-laws upgraded their phones a couple of weeks ago, hit with $60 in upgrade costs, but got them credited by calling VZW. YMMV on the credit. |

Taxes on 96 cents is negligible Taxes on data plan - maybe. I just called, and it's what I thought... prorated 1 day on a $30 plan, which is $1, plus tax. Maybe it's .002 cents <-- see what I did there? Check to see if your employer is listed for discounts on plans. Mine is 15% off phone plan, 20% data plan. In short, we're now at...
So for a skosh over $2, I have a phone that I can sell or trade for something else... and still have a second line ready for an upgrade. These Black Friday phone deals are the best! Last edited by standupdad; 11-07-2012 at 05:19 PM.. |

I just left SAMs and talked to the phone kiosk guy (without mentioning the deal) and asked if there are any stipulations to any possibly special deals they might get for BF. He said it never matters on deals whether it's dependent upon certain contracts, upgrades or new lines of service. The price they sell it at is the price they sell it at.
I just hope they have the deal for Sprint S3s at my store. I just bought my S2 last December and since ICS upgrade it just hasn't worked as well. LTE would be nice as well since Austin just got it. |
