I'm hesitant to buy something like a guitar online though. Ultimately, how do you know about the sound, intonation, etc. Can you play one in a store and safely expect another shipped unit to be comparable? Anyone care to share their experiences? Repped for the great guitar deal. If I didn't have a guitar already, it just might be worth the risk.

Repped for the great guitar deal. If I didn't have a guitar already, it just might be worth the risk.

Not sure if you read the description or not, but if you are able to find one of these in a store, you are more than welcome to play it and compare. However, no two guitars are the same. Accoustics, in particular, have the potential to vary significantly.

You ARE taking a gamble buying a guitar online. But, I think that as long as you are buying from a reputable online dealer, the gamble you are taking is that you won't like the guitar you received and will have to send it back for return or exchange--not that you are going to get stuck with a unplayable POS.

That's the risk. The reward is more attractive prices and selection.

Nope. No instruments are sold close to MSRP, regardless of the brand.

That being said, there are still variances if a guitar is not properly set up, but many guitars benefit from being set up to individual preferences.

That being said, I owned a Washburn all-solid wood guitar about 5 years ago and felt it was way overbuilt (heavy, dulled resonance). I prefer the sound from the Epiphone Masterbilt and Guild GAD series, both also made in China.

And it could be a Alvarez or Takamine (not fancy) that I own, as long as I like the sound. For me, it's a hard dilemma. I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices in stores, but I have a high likelihood that I won't like what I get.
