I saw these at my audiologists office and got one.

I am deaf (profound in left and severe in right) and this thing is awesome. I thought it was a one time use code, but I signed my Grandfather up for one and it discounted it to free so I thought I would share it.

When the installer came to my home (he flew out from Arizona!!!) I was curious how they make their money back able to afford this and he explained to me that it was a federally funded program and they get paid based on the minutes of usage and they monitor the minutes and get reimbursed out of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Those extra taxes you pay on your phone bill fund this program.

The ringer is LOUD LOUD LOUD. It can give someone a heart attack if they are by it. Haha. The phone itself can also be turned up quite loud. My wife can hear my conversation in the living room while I am on it in the kitchen.

They take care of repairs, shipping if you need to ship it back, etc. There is no catch here. Never a penny out of your pocket and I can testify to that. Been using mine for about a month now.

These units are VERY nice. Capacitive touch screens. Stores up to 450 contacts, photos. My boys love using it to, they are in the stage where they are just starting to learn to read.

Requires that you are hard of hearing or deaf.

Thanks thinkfire for adding your input! Have been keeping an eye out for a system like this, but it was on the "back burner wish list".

THEY FLEW HIM....ON TAX PAYERS MONEY....That is already at least $200+ down the drain just for travel. If it was local, i can see it happening, but this is waste. I just wonder how many programs do this type of stupid things. Hard of hearing for old people is as common as wrinkled skin is for old people. I hope they are not flying guys out often.

He was flown out to install about 20+ people in SW michigan area. Maybe more, I know he was there for the week.

That extra $$ you pay on your phone bill is what funds it. How else would you have it done? These are old folk mostly I am sure and they are not able to install it themselves. Cheaper than hiring people that have nothing to do for the rest of the month. As their demand gets up, they hire people in the area.

You TD a thread because you don't think old people or people like me with hearing loss should be able to connect with others and talk on a phone? *sigh*

If you don't like it, then cancel your phone and stop paying your bill and you won't be funding it with "your" tax payer money. Part of premise is that everyone has equal access opportunity to use the telephone system since it was so heavily subsidized by the federal government in the first place.

I hope your kids treat you the same way when you are older.

Use ClearCaptions.com for some calls, but would love to try out this system.

Clearcaptions seems cool. You use it on your iPhone? Too bad they don't have it for Android.

How does it work? Do you have to have people call a different number to connect to ClearCaptions server and then it calls your home phone? Or port your number to them or something?

Log into ClearCaptions and there will be two boxes - one for your number and the other for the number you want to connect to. Hit the button, and your phone will ring. After picking it up, the other number is dialed. When they pick up, you can keep an eye on the screen to read what they said, while having a verbal/audio conversation.

(I use a regular PC with Firefox)

Looking forward to when one can get eyeglasses or contact lens with built in captioning to put floating words where there are any sounds.
