The iPod touch is a great device. It is basically a iPhone without the phone (although there are apps to make it a phone). For a preteen an iPod touch is really a gaming device. At least that is what my younger brother and my girlfriend's little brother like to use mine for when I let them play with it. While I am sure an iPod touch would be used for music like any other iPod it might be better to think about it like a gameboy or some sort of portable gaming system because this is how many younger users seem to use them. Also as aforementioned you can download apps that will let you text as long as you have WiFi. This could be a very good solution for kids who want to text their friends without having to get them a real phone (this is what my little brother does). As far as cost for apps, most apps range from free-$5 each. I mostly stick to free apps, but will pay for a few classics like Monopoly when they go on sale for .99 cents.

Does this ipod have a speaker like iPad? Need one for voice output. Thanks!

Yes, IMO, it is a mini ipad (or very close to it)

All I can add to that is my daughter loves to use it for Face Time, making movies, taking pics etc.

Really been a great device for her. And we are not apple fanboys either. I think they charge a little too much for it but this is a very good product though and it holds resale quite well.

I was going to get a 32gb new off Amazon for my 6 year old for Christmas but this 64gb is highly tempting for the same price and being able to have more movies on at a time. Oh gonna have trouble convincing the husband of this one....
