*Update*

I ordered 2 on the 21st of November, one from Apple store and the other from Ebay. The one from Apple store originated from Shenzhen, China, and went through, Narita airport in Japan, Alaska, Memphis, TN, Seattle, and is now just 10 mins south of me in some wherehouse. The one I ordered from Ebay originated from Indiana or something like that, last scan was somewhere in the midwest I think and is probably nowhere near my location.

Funny how the iPod Touch from China got here way faster than the one that originated in America. It actually makes me feel better that it came from China because when I ordered my iPod Touch 5g it also originated from Shenzhen which makes me feel like it's a brand new item. The ones on Ebay apparently were already shipped from China and are sitting in some wherehouse in America.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but ebay has 2% cash back on FW. Save an extra $2.58.

I just bought on ebay because of the 2% but more importantly, no $10 tax...

*Update*

I just received my iPod touch 2 minutes ago at my door. It looks totally factory new. Everything is wrapped up tightly in plastic. The only thing that indicates it is not new is the "Apple certified refurbished" label on the top of the box. Anyone who receives this will be very happy cause if you don't look close you would swear it was brand new.

It turns on battery is already charged. Has 30 pin USB cable and headphones, no AC wall plug. Mine has iOS 6.0.1 on it and it's auto updating, never gave me the option to not update. Not happy about it, I wanted iOS 5. This is the model I ordered from Apple (shipped from China), the one from eBay is inexplicably still in transit despite the fact it's coming from the US.

Ok, I'm looking at iTunes and it says iOS 5.1 which is good. Don't understand why it says iOS 6 while it's downloading. I keep trying to interrupt the download cause I want to keep iOS 5.

I just placed an order thanks. I think I may have learned something about this deal. According to this article: http://www.tuaw.com/2012/11/19/ebay-opens-refurbished-apple-products-section/
Ebay has opened a section just for refurbished Apple stuffs. It is priced remarkably similar to this deal: http://stores.ebay.com/Refurbished-Outlet/iPod-/_i.html?_fsub=6284961018&_sid=1133255218&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322
If this is what we are actually buying then I feel comforted to know that:
We get 1 year warranty
Returned to like new condition
iPads and iPods include a new battery
Complete burn in testing
Original OS installed!!! (Yay!)
Repackaged with Manual and cable
Final quality inspection by Apple

I did not see these things while I was on the Apple site, but then again I wasn't exactly looking either. I was so annoyed with the fact that I had to place my order with my desktop computer because my order would not go through on my brand new iPod Touch. Stupid Apple Store doesn't even work with their own device.
...
**Update**

I just placed an order for a black 8GB model. I can confirm they do not charge tax. ...

Apple Store not working ... lol. Were you using the Apple Store app, or the Apple Store website?

When I click the link in your post to try to buy from eBay, I DO see CA sales tax being added on to the price.

I think the vendor might be from CA but my iPod touch was shipped from Indiana. It took at least 3 days longer to get the model I ordered from Ebay.

The iPod Touch I got from Ebay is iOS 6.0.1. The battery life is better than the white model I got direct from Apple (and it's obvious). I don't know why, I turned off location services and turned off the extra apps as well for both units. Weird. I guess this would explain why some people are complaining about poor battery life and others are not. I got one good unit and one not-so-good unit.

Been playing with these 2 units the past few days. This is an awesome gift for the kids, albeit expensive. The screen looks like high quality and brand new. I'm going to tell my nephew and niece this will be the last Xmas gift they get for the next 3 years.

For those on the fence about whether or not to get this unit or the latest and greatest iPod Touch (5th gen), the 5th is better by a mile. I'm learning that many apps, like Djay and iMovie are missing features on the 4th gen. For Djay, the 5th gen has the ability to sync two songs so the BPM are exactly the same (better for mixing). The 4th gen lacks this ability. In iMovie the 4th gen lacks the ability to make Trailers which is a huge selling point for many.

The 4th gen's screen is also considerably smaller, despite the fact that it's only 1/2" smaller on paper. It also looks not as crisp as the 5th gen screen and is not as bright or white.

The 4th gen also missing key features like Bluetooth which makes wireless music transmission a no-go.
Where are you getting your info from?

The iPod touch 4th gen definitely DOES have Bluetooth. Heck, the 2nd gen has it. Only the 5th has version 4.0 support. But that's not needed for AirPlay wireless music transmission, which the iPod touch 4th gen. does support as well. I don't know about the other stuff you say the 4th gen doesn't have, LOL.

How many days it took overall for you to get the ipod touch delivered to you from the time of ordering from apple store?

The real cost/benefit issue becomes that, even with IOS, 8 gb just isn't enough if you are buying it for someone that primarily wants games and music (like my son). 8 GB doesn't go far ...

PS - Not raising that as an Apple slam (we have plenty of Apple equipment here), just a storage issue.
