Wal-Mart offers its earliest Black Friday ever, w/ guaranteed availability on some items

You're right we are essential workers and retailers are not....doesn't make it ok to whine about them having to work...what's your point?? Most of us do not get OT etc. pay for working holidays either, just a different day off!

yea. because I don't dedicate a single day of the year to spend time with my family.

This seems to come up every Black Friday. Why do people assume that everyone celebrates Thanksgiving on Thursday or even celebrates it at all?

The difference is in essential services vs. desired products. We don't NEED new televisions, car wax, and a vibrator that sings "o come all ye faithful". Especially on Thanksgiving, we are supposed to be appreciative of the things we have, not desire. So, we have these holidays where non-essential services are supposed to take the day off and people enjoy each other's company. If the stove goes up in flames though, we definitely need some firemen to help out. Does this clear up the distinction?

Well my husband works in a steel mill. If he has to work Thanksgiving he does not get paid anymore than the day before or after. And its a 12 hour shift. So like I said a lot of people work on holidays not just essential services.

Noooo, the difference is not essential vs desired, only in your opinion! Many people for whatever reason, find it essential to them to do their ritual shopping on that day....to them it is essential....it is not up to you to decide for the public what you believe to be essential as a qualifier. Main point is no whining or feeling sorry for certain workers only....understand now?

Most places are? That's far from a fact.

Most offices are closed, most retail businesses are closed (besides Wal-Mart), most banks are closed, most non essential services are closed.

Nobody is saying retail workers are any better, but it's just an unnecessary move.. isn't midnight close enough? Most of these retail works don't just show up at 8PM, they have to set the store up and prepare stuff that may take hours.

Keep in mind thanksgiving isn't just immediate family, it's seeing uncles, aunt's, cousins, etc.. 1/3 of Americans plan to travel for thanksgiving and have these large gatherings. These people are losing time with family members they may only get to see once or twice a year all to sell some cheap shit a few hours earlier than norm.

Anyway, whatever.. you won't see me at one of these, but to each their own.

I'm going to go with earning minimum wage. Stores don't need to be open on Turkey Day. We don't need to go out and spend, spend, spend on Turkey Day.

As for other workers, they are getting paid well to work on Turkey Day. As for Cops, Firefighters, EMS, healthcare workers, they do get paid well on holidays, as well as if you work one, you are off the other.

I work in a field that is 24/7. I'm on call for Turkey Day Weekend. Happens. I didn't have to work it last year. The issue I have is with greed of big companies wanting to open earlier & earlier to try to get sales on no name products (usually).

As last year, I will be doing the Amazon/Newegg Black Friday deals.

What people fail to realize is that this whole "move up Black Friday store hour openings" is actually a conspiracy plot by the Black Panthers. They want an entire Black Week. One day simply wasn't good enough for them.
