Drinking and driving is another big issue. I host the holiday for a very large gathering with three turkeys, one ham and all the sides. With that I serve wine and beer, I work hard to ensure the "drivers" are not intoxicated, so others can be drunk stuffed and merry. Now I have to worry about people ruining out after dinner who may be tipsy or just buzzed I hope the CEOs realize they suck asssssss as they ruin the holiday / or the shopping fun for us all.

This actually works out quite well for me. The people who are there for the doorbusters will be long gone by the time I get there for games and movies. Most of those are well stocked and last well into the afternoon on friday unless its a hot title at an absurd price.

So for those against the Thurs evening opening times, how many of you will not go out, but instead will sit at home ignoring your family while you shop online? That's more disrespectful than just getting up and leaving after dinner.
Better yet, after dinner why doesn't the whole family get up and go shopping? Then everyone gets to stay together and work off some of the 3,000 calorie dinner everyone had.

I agree that this is absolute bullshit. No one should have to leave their Thanksgiving dinner to stand in line a few hours early to ensure they get the items they want.
And none of that "you don't have to go" crap. Black Friday is SUPPOSED to be FRIDAY, not Thursday. I expect to be able to celebrate Thanksgiving and then go shopping for deals the next day. I rely on a lot of those deals for Christmas gifts, being a poor college graduate. Ugh. Annoying. My first Slickdeal - HP TouchPad - $99

In the US Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. It's a non secular Holiday and for many it is very important. |

I think people are getting too worked up over nothing, black Friday will not be the only day with deals. No one is forced to go, your dinner can still resume on Thursday just don't expect people to wait for you to finish it. I can see how it would be upsetting but honestly I think 8 p.m. is a fair hour to start it could be far worse.

I will also work BF all day at my non-retail job this year like I have for the past 20 years. Big deal. I don't expect the rest of America to delay shopping to wait for me because I have to work on BF. My point is people here are whining and have this sense of entitlement like spoiled 12 year olds. Everyone has choices. Some choices are not always great but you make them and move forward rather than complain like a kid that can't have his or her way. As I said before, many here need to grow up and do what is best for their situation. If shopping is your priority, great, shut up and go for it. If family is your priority, great, stay home. Wait for a SD down the road. Value the time with family over some stupid iPad if that is what moves you. Whatever. Bottom line is there are choices that work which don't necessitate whining because of missing a doorbuster for some crappy $150 HDTV or other item. |

People do enjoy shopping. People like bargains, this site existing is a testament to that. By opening their stores at 8 PM (or earlier) on Thanksgiving the stores are saying if you want a bargain that may never be duplicated you have to give up part of your Holiday and get in line. Sure you don't have to shop if you don't want but maybe you can understand why some people don't like the early openings and not just tell them to shut up. |

It's illegal to open retail stores on Thanksgiving day in Maine so I'm kind of curious how our local ads will differ from the national. I'm guessing this means that I can take advantage of all the sales online on Thanksgiving day and will only need to wander out Friday morning if I can't get a couple of things online.

For those who are justifying this:
Look, I worked retail for 15 years. I didn't want to work retail. No one wants to work a job where people treat you like garbage, spit on you, call you horrible names, and on top of that you have to work the crappiest hours in the world. No one volunteers for that. "Then find another job, it's your choice to work there." Oh really? Yeah, let me just take my retail experience and just find another job in a country with 8% unemployment and a recession. Yeah, no problem. Seriously? What happened to empathy guys? I'm not saying you are right or wrong for wanting to shop on Thanksgiving. All I am asking is for people to be a little more respectful of the situation these employees are in. IT IS NOT A CHOICE to work retail. I am appalled at how casually people disregard others during the holiday season of all times. Come on! |
