The problem is that AVG & MSE aren't the sites that find & detect MOST of the new variants or new trojans, virus, malware. They consistantly RATE in the mid to higher 70% tile in detection and protection. Compared to Norton, Kaspersky, and Bitdender (Avast is a far better free alternative though there is some nagging involved) which rate in the upper to high 95%+ range some 99% year after year. As for bloated you obivously haven't been running Norton or Kaspersky in a long time. If you are scanning you can have it done automatcally in the background or during non-use times. If you are scanning during you work times on a Pentium 4 you are going to notice it whether it's AVG, Kaspersky , Norton, or MSE. On a faster dual core or quad core it's an after thought unless you happen to have a slow drive, or are heavily accessing such as a file conversion or photo editing but again that's why all those programs allow for scaled cpu use and or simply to be set for automatic or off peak time use. This bundled AVG product is ONLY an anti-virus (while they do actually sell a internet security package it's main component is still in the 70% & is subpar - compared to the best) just like MSE AV only. Too often people think they aren't infected simply bc they don't notice a slow down in performance. Depending on who/what the authors of the trojan/virus are that may be exactly what / how they want it. A zombie box or a keystroke gleemer infection want to have litle to no impact on performance that is UNTIL you goto your banking sites and they in a flash they have your log on & password and you didn't notice a thing, or until they need to user your computer and 1000 other zombie boxes just like it to carry out an attack. The bare minimum of a good defense is a Software firewall, a hardware firewall spi/nat via a router or a dedicated firewall box, Anti-virus, and malware protection. I run process explorer in my system tray looking for programs performing incorrectly or using resources excessively and the (three top paid but found multiple times every month for FAR) are well trained & controlled software. If you want you can perform a faster scan or you can dial it into the background. On an SSD the scan will be done before you believe it. But again this myth of the bloated software is cira 2008 for Norton & longer for Kaspersky. There are always going to issues & anomolies... I used to get the dreaded 100% CPU usage on some P4's that I was buying & refurbishing for resale. I could have two nearly identical computers bought from a university, same MOBO, same processor, same hard drive size & brand, same CD Rom & have the same OS install process, and have one that would peg the CPU w/ MSE while the other did not. But those days of P4 are almost behind us, if you have a P4 then you can set these IS & AV software to tread lightly. Of course you give up some additional protection from heavier heuristic and program scanning but those are old systems so you gotta do what you can. At least the top software allows for those options. The problem is the mentality that if I'm not a pron junky I'm safe is what isn't using common sense or at least not keeping up with the changing threats. I used to play with honey pots (leaving a DMZ port open on a PC and just track all the pings it would get from people running IP address scans and watch how many would try and hack in. The majority of that stopped by a hardware firewall that pretends there is no connection at your IP address for un-authorised / un-wanted \ or un-solicited traffic. If you could only get infected by going to sites that "grown ups" are free to go to that would be one thing. But think about this the next time you log onto read your electricty meter and see 4 ads there that are serviced by outside ad click revenue sites... If one or all of them were affected, and your AV was days behind the leaders in detecting & writing definitions you'd better hope it isn't going to do anything harmful in the mean time. In the end it's your money & your machines but the facts are these: -The facts are they run lean compared to the days of old not just because processors/systems are faster but that helps & you can dial it them into your your level of performance or paranoia -The outperform consistently AVG & MSE it's not even close - average people that don't do online banking or shop over the internet will be fine because the risk of getting their data stolen or accounts hacked doesn't exist. Those that shop & bank online need to be proactive and defensive. On screen keyboards help thwart keyloggers & using intermediate sites like paypal or use time use cc #s also help cut down on peoples exposure. -They have an up front cost but between Fry's & Newegg you can find Kaspersky, Norton, or Bitdender's Security software usually multi-license 3 to 5 computers / devices for FAR nearly every week or other week. Here's superoceans thread: http://slickdeals.net/f/5468430-F...m-Mechanic He posts the weekly FAR Fry's specials. http://www.frys.com/product/6829916 - Kaspersky 1 - 5 pcs or devices (so if you have a smart phone you can do that plus 4 pcs or tablets etc.) FAR Newegg in one of their ads believe it expires on the 12th of Nov. Has Kaspersky Pure 2.0 for 3 licenses FAR & Email code. Norton will be on soon & so will Bitdender.
There again though there is a problem, no script shuts down the function of many websites forcing you to open temporary at a minimum or permanent holes in order to be able to complete say a purchase, or view what you are expecting to see. Hell, you can't even use SD's properly without opening a few temporary holes, or permanent ones with no script. Excuse my terrible spelling my checker is malfunctioning. Not all sites use the same scripts so that's why I recommended the collusion link so people could get an idea of the interconnections between many of them. If you look at the banners on Yahoo Mail or SDs and you see an add for a product you just were looking at or for a store with the items you were just shopping for that's all because of those interconnected scripts. It's a little creepy I think to be on SD's and take a link to Office Max only to be created as Hello SD shopper etc. I can make that all disappear when I want to. The one thing I will say though is I've actually benefited from that by seeing a price drop in a product I had just looked at hours before... so maybe it's not all bad. It's not a perfect system or solution by any means and that was my point. It's still a great deal more secure than doing what 90+% of all users already do which is no script blockers running at all. This is not opening up a portal and allowing a free range of attacks against your system, rather is letting in a few scripts to complete the job then closing them off again while your system is continuing to be protected by AV/Firewall\Malware security software. If people fire up & use IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera etc. without being able to & installing one of these blocking add-ons then they don't even have that layer of protection. So opening a few holes in it temporarily is a smaller vulnerability. The only way if for sites (Slickdeals, Newegg, Amazon, Tiger Direct, Best Buy, GameStop, Facebook, .... to do the blocking for us and allow 100% functionality without requiring them. You know, old time ![]() But If I'm researching an item that's on sale many times I can do an awful lot of that research with all the scripts blocked. When I have to let it down or when I'm using another browser, that's were the security software comes into play and better be doing it's job. I even have to disable some of Malwarebyte's proactive protection, like website blocking quite frequently as well. Because if you use downloading sites of the RapidShare ilk' you'll have many links that are using protectors and others that for free users pop open other webpages & have re-directs before you can get to the actual page you want to. Malwarebytes correctly detects these as possibly harmful and negative behavior and blocks many of them, but I still want or desire to get to the link so I have to over rule Malwarebytes. And lower that protection temporarily. I only wish that like Kasperky IS if you disable the protection it will time itself out or allow you to disable it for a period of time before re-enabling bc sometimes I forget to pull my zipper back up.

Don't get caught on your knees buying this deal. A little birdie told me a much better price is coming tomorrow. I'll keep you posted!

Is it a FAR perchance? ...from your namesake? Seriously, I was thinking about the the reply you made the other day when I was writing the zipper reference. Clearly not my best work but I always feel a little vulnerable when people point that out. Thanks for the heads up. I have a few copies on hand, but I'm usually looking for more. |

============ ------------- BTW, yes it's the Reventon Ransomware that uses pieces of the Citadel malware software. This latest mutation / variant I've seen is quite unnerving for people with webcams on their computer or built into their laptop as it acts as though it's recording the webcam stream for evidence, along with posting the IP address of the computer. http://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/2...ernet-scam Last edited by Bdubslawman; 11-14-2012 at 10:06 PM.. |

We've had roughly 30 "FBI" infected systems in the last 2 months, and they have had all kinds of antivirus programs on them (McAfee, Norton, MSE, Avast, AVG, Kaspersky). Some of them have caught parts of the virus, but not all of it. The things in common with most of the systems are that they don't have Java and Adobe Flash Player up to date, and they are using IE as their default browser. I keep my programs and plug-ins up-to-date religiously. That's why I think I haven't so much as sniffed a virus in 10 years on any of my computers. |
