Thread Details

This deal is listed in Page 9 of staples ad for the week 11/11 - 11/17. Limit 10 Staples Gift Cards per name/address/household. Of course, there is an activation fee of $5.99 on the $100 Visa / Master cards. Even after factoring in the activation fee, it is a potential $9 MM deal(in the form of Staples GC..) per VISA/Master card purchase.

ok some key points about this rebate:

1. Staples weekly ad [staples.com] ,page 10, says only this:
"Buy $100 in Visa® or MasterCard® gift cards and get a $15 Staples® gift card"
-It does not say "Buy $100 or more..."
-nothing about any limits
Based on this, they have to give out at least $15 per each $100 purchased ... or else it would be false advertizing...

2. The rebate receipt that prints out is worded differently:
"Get a $15 Staples Gift Card on purchase of $100 or more on Visa and MC gift cards"
and
"Limits per customer/address/household: 10"
and
"Purchase $100 or more on Visa or MC gift cards...then submit or mail it in to receive a Staples card. Limit 10 Staples Gift Cards per name/address/household"

Now .. if they do not honor the PRINTED ad offer of $15 per $100, it would be a bait and switch scheme...
You can't tell me to buy something and promise me $30 Staples gift card if i buy it, and THEN turn around and tell me i'm only getting $15... and i can't even return the product...

So i think we're guaranteed at minimum $30 per $200 card bought...
However, the issue still remains on the limit.

As for the glitch:
On the Rebate Form that prints out when you buy 3 x $200 gift cards it says:

Description: $200 Visa Gift
SKU: 374177
UPC :076750095160
Quantity you purchased: 3
Unit price: 200.00

Description: $200 Visa Gift
SKU: 374177
UPC :076750095160
Quantity you purchased: 3
Unit price: 200.00

Description: $200 Visa Gift
SKU: 374177
UPC :076750095160
Quantity you purchased: 3
Unit price: 200.00

... it says quantity i purchased = 3 , 3 times !!! ... the system sees quantity purchased as 9... and it's giving me 9 x $15 = $135 rebate Staples Card

It is wrong that it sees qty: 9 total, and i would expect this to be fixed.... however ... it should be 6 x $15... based on the printed AD, otherwise it would be bait and switch.

Your points are valid, but why is the system then giving $75 rebate for 2 x $200? The math for that one doesn't seem to work out the same as the 3 x $200.

So I bought 7 $200 GCs last night. Did three submission.
1 - 3x $200 - showing $135
1 - 3x $200 - showing $135
1 - 1x $200 - showing $30

My problem now in putting them in, I forgot to put one of the 3x $200 submissions to a different name and address Doh I wonder if I can have them update the name and address information for one of them to ensure it validates properly, or do ones that know the system best feel Im fine leaving them all as is?
hey mathfaster, you have any advice for me on this submission?

Manager just called back and said I could come in and buy the cards. It is like I got per-approved for a loan.

My question to her was why did they carry the card if they are that concerned?

Oh well, I hope this all works out. This is the hardest I have had to work for a slick deal.
Good luck, make sure you ask for her when you go in so you don't get bs from someone else. Usually you can get what you want if you talk to the GM and they see you aren't a weirdo but that all depends on the person.

Don't put too mach faith in the 3x3. When I bought 2x$200 I have 2x2 on the receipt but a rebate of $75 instead of $60. Does not square with 3x3.

Yup, clearly a glitch....
But we have the basis to argue that we should receive at least $30 per $200 card bought.... which is not bad...getting $30 Staples card, for $7 cash.... if/when they decide to adjust the rebate amounts....

This thread is still going strong!
It's a screw-up by Staples and I expect it would be corrected by them sooner or later.

OK, I got me email for the 3x $200. Confirmed as $135.

In summary, bought 2x $200 @ 1253 EST today - $75
bought 3x $200 @ 1302 EST today - $135
Why is everyone buying 2 x $200 + 3 x $200 recently? It seems better to buy 3 x $200 multiple times for the same name/household. People are thinking there is a $1000 cap on purchases per acct, but no evidence of this whatsoever and actually evidence to the contrary.

The max is probably 10 cards per acct, so your best bet there is buy 3 x (3 x $200) and then maybe 1 additional $200 after that. I'm not buying anything else for now but if I hadn't started yet, that would be my strategy.

I doubt they would retroactively change the amounts unless they really hate the people working CS.

Did another 4 cards tonight ...the rebate still gives $135 for 3x $200 and $30 for 1x $200...Did the rebates 10 min ago.

When u say ANOTHER 4, does that mean can we purchase 10 cards (visa of value $200 /address) OR is it still the max rebate limit of $150.

Can u please confirm ?
TIA

Staples near my place is out of $200 , what is the best bet after that? I see they have $100 MC and Visa cards.

Also, do they stock up regularly?

Mine was pretty simple, my Chase card has a limit of $600 so I could only invest the first $414 on that card. I then rolled these and put the rest on another card. I wasn't going to invest more than $1000 if the deal was dead.

Well the way I'm starting to understand how this deal should have gone is this:

From the wording in the ad it's 10 Staples GC per household, not purchase of 10 Visa/MC gift cards. If they go by their own ad then for every $100 spent triggers 1 $15 Staples GC. So that means you have $1000 to max out (since limit is 10 and every $100 spent is 1 $15 GC) per household/address before they should deny you any more Staples cards. At that time you can do another $1000 using another address.

So doing the 3 x $200 and then 2 x $200 would get you to that $1000 spent and trigger 10 $15 Staples GC card or total of $150. Take away the $35 fees and you left with $115 Staples GC for FREE for each household/address.

Everyone is doing 3 and 2 because it's the "best" combo for $1k. Not to say that this may get "fixed" later. And the $1K cap, to me, is the most conservative approach to looking at what the maximum limits would be. Since no rebates have been issued (hell even validated) and the terms are so ambigious that Staples could choose to enforce whatever they want, I agree with Mathfaster that $1K is a good number to aim for per address.

No, no real advice. I like the total though.nod I don't remember much from posts about fixing rebates after the fact except when people where invalidated for being over the limit and they used two different addresses but were still invalidated. Problem is there are no returns/rebuys on gift cards to get rid of the one you wanted to change. OTH, these could go through. Probably not but who knows.

You could try the "I bought some gift cards for granny for Xmas" approach and say you meant to submit the rebate for her but used your own address and granny lives a ways a way.Big Grin Not sure how well that would go over with Parago. Just cannot remember anyone with this issue. Least that I remember.

Haha thanks foxmon. Currently on page 8 of 40 with 40 posts per page . I still want to read through the whole thing? Smilie
Haha ha , u sound like me. That is what I usaully do most of the time. I am still on 14th pg, but atleast by reading the last 2 pages came to know that I can buy 3 cards and 2 of $200 Visa, which I did today morning and rebate shows as $135 and $75 in progress. But I am not sure if the limit is 5 or 10 cards of $200 visa irrespective of the $150 max rebate.

May be will come to know if I can read through all pages, not sure how long it might take. Would still appreciate if someone can answer before my store runs out of all the cards if so.laugh out loud

I agree. Like I posted worst case scenario you are left with $115 GC card (after taking out the $35 in fees) for FREE.
