It's a great drive for NAS. If you want a desktop drive, it's still a good drive, but you're paying for NAS specific features that are not necessary in a desktop.

How is the Red different from the Blue and Black series?

An important note on HDD's shipped from NewEgg - as of about a year ago, their packing practices with HDD's led to a number of physical abuses by UPS that led to DOA hard drives - this is reflected in many reviews, including the 2 TB Caviar Black's, both enterprise and regular, and many more. If Amazon is only $9 more, and you won't get charged tax, I highly recommend them on purchase of a harddrive - their packing material is much more dense, and as someone who's maybe ordered 20 in the past year, 18 or so have been from Amazon for this reason - zero DOA issues so far. Just thought I'd share my 2c, and I'm not sure if NewEgg has taken any corrective action. If so, this change is not well documented.

Newegg hard drive shipping is atrocious, no thanks. Suggest people go with the Amazon one...

The WD Red are IMO, the best balance of performance and price for media storage. The greens are too slow, and the blacks are too fast.

I've heard about poor NewEgg shipping practices years ago. I'm very surprised they haven't addressed the issue by now!

Just to throw in some fairly recent anecdotal evidence, I ordered 2 2TB WD Green drives at the end of August and they came individually wrapped in bubble wrap. The wrap spanned the entire outside of each drive and almost tripled the thickness, which seemed to be pretty good to me (wish I would've taken a pic or two). Here's hoping mine wasn't an outlier and Newegg is starting to address people's concerns.

I just bought four WB 3TB Green drives from them and the packaging was very good. They were sitting in the hard styrofoam (like the one here [imageshack.us], but only 4 slots) bubble wrapped and taped very well. They also had lots of paper around it as well to fill in the rest of the space in the box. I was impressed, especially after hearing how bad their packaging should have been. You can shake the box and nothing would move in side

PS. I only used two of the drives so far, and they both work. I don't expect to have any problems with the other two either.

Good to hear Newegg finally has addressed this issue that has been ongoing for at least 4 years now!
