Would we be able to crack open the case on the above Best Buy BF drive and use it as an internal HDD? I've only had experience with prying open Western Digital and Toshiba Touro external drives in the past.
Of course you could, but cracking open the case also brings up warranty issues.
Are the 3TB models single drives? I'm seeing a lot more DOA complaints on 3TB HDDs (internal) than 2TB and smaller. Might just be anecdotal but I'm personally avoiding 3TB for now.
Capacity for a single hard drive these days is now up to 4 TB.
Most 3 TB drives made in the past year are using 1 TB platters inside (versus 5 platters of 600 GB each in previous years). I believe most 4 TB drives are using 5 platters, 800 GB each. Many prefer higher capacity drives with fewer platters because it is believed fewer mechanical parts make them more reliable (number of heads also factor in)...
It seems to be a general rule of thumb, the higher the TB, the higher the failure rate. And external drives seem to have an even higher failure rate vs. ones you install in your PC. Lots of folks that build their own PCs will spend the money on a higher end 500 GB drive for solid reliability instead of higher capacity drives as their main boot/OS drive, installing higher capacity TB drives in secondary slots as storage drives. (IMHO, it's better to get more smaller capacity drives vs relying on one high capacity drive...and always make a backup of your backup, preferably on blu ray disc...most drives only last 2 to 5 years, older lower TB drives are the exception)
My husband said he would like an external drive so he could put movies on it. I'm a girl who has no clue about computers! Can you point me in the right direction? He wants to be able to plug in in our tv or in our installed carseat (for the baby).I'm guessing I'm looking for a 1TB portable drive?
