You are correct that apps which target Windows Phone 8 will not run on devices running Windows Phone 7. However, the fear that WP7 devices will be useless is way overblown and generally perpetuated by those that don't understand the mobile industry. The only rational reason developers would target Windows Phone 8 is if they must call into the APIs that support a feature exclusive to Windows Phone 8 (NFC, DirectX etc.)

There are over 120K apps in the marketplace right now and almost all new apps being added to the marketplace will continue to be runnable on a WP7 device since developers will create apps that can be run on as many devices as possible.

Very good phone for the elderly. Window Phone is the way to go. iOS and Android was way too much for my aunt but window phone was simple enough for her to use.

If you don't care about apps and just want basic smartphone features like access to email and web browsing, you'd be hard pressed to find a NEW android option better than this. I, too, am an Android user and wouldn't consider a Windows phone. But I'm considering it for my parents, who want to be able to text easier than a dumbphone can and check email easily. But they're not going to be downloading the latest apps. And they keep their phones for 2+ years, and I've found that phones that're already used when I get them will break down before they're ready to get new ones.

My sister in law has been using Lumia 710 and she loves it. We can use skype and a lot more, it's really an excellent device, she loved it so much my brother in law bought one as well. They paid $50 to T-Mobile when they extended their contracts, so it is an excellent deal. The colors are great, and OS nearly never hangs, it is fast and has excellent built in options, so I would guess 7.5 is even better.

If you are on a budget and don't really care for a lot of crap that google offers, or hate google, get this phone. Otherwise get the Exhibition 4G HSN is offering now for $120.
