Only cuz I wanted to stay in 400-500 range. The 412+ is indeed nice,
I will say that in my personal opinion, the 413 (along with the 213+) is actually not a good buy at all because it uses the Freescale PPC processors. The 412+ and others beyond are Intel Atom-based while the lower versions like 213, 413j are ARM-based. The PPC-based NASes from Synology do not have great software support especially from 3rd parties and the biggie for me is Plex for video streaming and htpcs/iOS/Android. There is no version of Plex to run on the 413 (and 213+) at all and according to the Plex Developers do not expect one soon (or at all) due to there not being enough PPC-based NASes. Just consider that if you are thinking about the 413. In my mind, if you're spending that much on a NAS, you might as well future-proof yourself a bit more and ensure compatibility with programs by getting the 412+.

When does this deal end exactly. I'd like to wait it out to see if Amazon responds.
I got the email from Newegg this morning and it says it is a 72 hour sale.

Thanks for the info. I didn't even realize that. I currently have several services that I want the nas to take over on, plex being one of em.

1512+...Soooo tempting but BF is nigh.

$750.42 to the door. $50 less than Amazon.

TU and repped.
You waiting for BF for this unit or did you pull the trigger with this 15% off deal? I'm not sure it will go any lower.

Awesome! I ordered a 1512+ this afternoon from Amazon and was able to cancel and get from Newegg. Between the lower purchase price, no tax @Newegg, and a free Shoprunner "come back to us for a year free" offer, this saved me just over $140.

$750 on the closure and $2100 on the hard drives. I am not sure I want to spend that much on a computer network storage system.

Not sure I follow your math and the storage requirements and value of the data being stored should inform the cost of the disks.

5 x 3TB WD Reds = $860 @Amazon right now, assuming Prime /no tax would yield about 12TB of RAID5 storage, 9 with a hot spare. ($71/TB, $95/TB)

5x2TB WD Reds = $545 @Newegg, 8TB of RAID 5 storage, 6TB with a hot spare. ($68TB/$90/TB)

You could spend a lot more on enterprise drives (RE/Constellation) but the WD Red's seem to be the new hotness right now with far lower cost, heat and power at the expense of slightly lower perf.

I ordered the 1512+ to replace my butt slow Drobo FS. Any owner forums you guys recommend?

The 412+ is last year's model and basically identical to the 413, which sells for $500. The rest of the models that can use the coupon are extremely expensive; the 1512 instead of the 212, for example, or even rack-mounted systems for datacenters. Not great consumer-level deals.

What I really want is a deal on the DS-413.

I was eyeing the 212j for my first nas. Anyone think that's a waste because its only 2 bays? Can't really afford to spend more than 300 or so right now, but just don't wanna buy something that will wind up obsolete in leas time. Fwiw I am not gonna be a needy user, even if I lost (most all) of my data I probably wouldn't be so heart broken.

Why have a NAS? seems so much cheaper to build a pc and use it as a server. Is there an advantage of a NAS?

Get the 212j when it's on sale. Don't listen to others and get a plus version. You can do all the extra features on your computer, the network sharing function is what you really need on 212j. It streams videos perfectly. It's a good buy, but don't pay for stuff you don't need. Get 2 3TB hard drive and you will be happy.

I held off for now. My only excuse is that as I was considering the deal my neighbors came over and took me out for Mexican food and got me drunk.

The 1512+ is portable.

Any other advantages I should know? I dont plan on taking my server anywhere.. Im in the process of building a media server that will play as a desktop computer, that will stream to a HTPC and an xbox 360.
