With no disrespect to the OP for posting a legit discount, but be aware this registrar is the worst (per history of comments by SD'ers).
Be sure to read everything if and when you transfer-out. Closing your account is not as cut and dry as you might imagine.
FYI: $0.99 offer does not work w/transfers - Only new domains.

I have used them in the past. It is very simple to cancel. People are dumb

No wonder why they do so much advertising!

They are kind of like the TigerDirect of web hosting. But be smart about what you agree to and this deal is fine.
The renewal cost is what you want to watch for. Their renewals are around $10, so not too bad.
Register.com is doing $1 / $2 deals for the first year but renewals run around $40!
Personally, I don't haven't hosted with 1&1 for a long time, but I have registered a handful of domains on this deal. Good way to try some site ideas out, if they don't pan out you are only out a buck.

I had a hosting package with 1&1 for a few years and never had any issues. When I decided to cancel my hosting, it was very easy to update my nameservers, transfer domains, and close the account. Nice post OP!

I just signed up for this the other day I got a domain here pictureinfocus.com for $0.99 everything setup smooth I did get a call 2 days later with them trying to sell me some adding features but I was nice to the lady and declined and she said no problem.

Wow I finally got my order done. Talk about getting into a loop! I had to use Chrome to get through it, but it might have had something to do with not putting a dash in my phone number while signing up using IE9. Anyway it's handled.

There is a better deal... trialpay offers 2 fandango movie tickets for spending $5 or more on godaddy... Just purchased a .com domain on godaddy with whois protection for $16 and got $24 worth bond movie tickets for free...

stay away from 1and1.On any domain register,if you do not renew your domain and let is expire,you can forget about it.But on 1and1 they will auto renew the domain and charge you at what ever the full renew price.Last time I registered a domain for 99 cents with a VCC and I rarely used it and thought it will expire and not bothered to renew or look into it.But I was suprised when I got a invoice in the mail that they renewed my domain and also charged for a free subdomain (they gave me as part of sign up process to host my welcome/under construction page).It was around $38 for both.The customer service was horrible.They told me that they will into it and cancel it.But to my surprise they sent to collections !

1and1 is one of the sleaziest companies to deal with, I would never do business with such an outfit again. This $0.99 will cost you dearly, not to mention the constant calls to upsell you even when you tell them to stop. Your information will be sold to third parties, it's an awful awful company!
