I know this isn't that recent... but TigerDirect has sold this exact same drive for $149.99 with Free Shipping.

Definitely a pretty good price compared to what other retailers are selling 4 TB externals at right now.

Not many retailers are carrying this Seagate model... and those that are don't have any stock. There must be a production shortage on these high capacity drives.

I noticed something interesting about the model #'s as well.

The Costco Model is: STAC4000600
The TigerDirect Model is: STAC4000100

Newegg says that the TigerDirect model is now discontinued. I'm curious as to why...

At my local Costco they are selling the 4TB Seagate Backup Plus for $179.99. I bought this, pried it open and put the 4TB drive in my NAS.

For comparsion, Amazon sells the same 4TB drive for $324.

Buying the external drive from Costco saves you $144 from the bare drive price.

Does removing void the warranty? Is this a 5400/5900 rpm drive or a 7200? If you have a model# on the drive label, that would work!

It should void the warranty, yes. Whether they'll do a warranty exchange on a unit with a broken seal is still up to them. These external drives cannot be warrantied as bare drives for any reason.

Although Costco's return policy [costco.com]might make the mfg warranty irrelevant.
