Segate 4 Tb backup plus external hard drive for $179 plus tax at Cost co.

I was able to get this deal by connecting my AmEx card with my Facebook account.

1. The $149 4TB drives from TigerDirect never shipped
2. This isn't a spectacular deal if you want to use the drive in a NAS
3. Hitachi 4TB drives have been hovering around $200 [bhphotovideo.com] each [amazon.com], with no tax for some

Breaking the case usually voids the wty, most HDD mfrs track the serial #s pretty tightly due to counterfeit product and stolen shipments.

In fairness, nobody should trust their data to a single location/drive.

But agree this is a big gamble to put down on a seagate drive. Some people will buy these for their server & then be denied warranty... Will keep holding out for some non-seagate deals...

The right answer should be: I would not trust my data to any storage system whose data integrity depends on reliability of any single drive.

I just got 3 of these.
Pretty nice so far.

Very fast with usb 3.0 controller. moving 2.75TB of data from another usb 3.0 drive says it will take 6 hours.
NOTE: this drive has a built in dock. Seagate allows you to remove the usb3.0 connector on the dock and replace it with their firewire or thunderbolt dock instead so you can upgrade this drive to firewire or thunderbolt OR use the dock to attach another bare drive in a pinch. Thats a nice bonus.

Overall I am surprised this isn't getting more thumbs. Probably because searching for '4tb' does not bring up this thread. OP posted '4 tb' instead. Hehe.
