Thread Details

This is what I've been waiting for - I just got a print out at the Kroger checkout lane saying it will happen again from Nov 18 until Dec 9. If you have a Kroger nearby and are planning a large purchase consider the gift cards from Kroger. Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Home Depot, etc. $100 in gift cards will get you 400 points = 0.40 cents off per gallon, better yet $500 in gift cards allows you to save $2/gallon for up to 35 gallons for a single fill up = $70 in savings.

You get 1X points for pre paid visa/master cards. I am hoping that it will go up to 2X during this event. I use my Amex card for the 6% off even though that is now limited to 6K for the calendar year.
Oops.. When did they bring this 6K rule? Is it for old customers too?

Just started. If you login to your Amex account you will see it under rewards. The Amex gravy train is over......

1. Weigh in on whether it's best to buy GCs off GC resellers at discounts (Plasticjungle.com etc). Sometimes, buying GCs for 4x points even with CB is not good. E.g. if you buy $500 JCPenney GC from Krogers, it's going to fetch you 2000 points and $30 cashback (at 6% max). Assuming you do fill out gas, max limit is 35 gallons, and at $2 off a gallon, that is $70. So total is about $100 ($70 + $30) saving. Now, if you rather buy JCPenney gift card, which goes on sale at 30% at times, $500 saves you $150 right there without all hassle. That may not be true for a BestBuy gift card though.

2. Always plan ahead and stock up on GCs for BF.

3. Don't buy electronics with GCs. This is my personal preference though. As you lose the added protection/ warranty the credit cards offer on electronics. Buy using Amex and your warranty is doubled (to max some years based on card).

Thanks OP!! This is just in time for the holidays. I usually get Amazon and gas cards and a couple of VISA's. I always use the whole 35 gallons, I love when I don't have to buy groceries to get the gas points!

I just want to correct and clarify a few things in this thread.

The Visa/Amex/MC variable load (think $20-$500 you choose what you are loading) cards have always and should continue to earn 1x fuel points regardless of the 4x promotion.

The $25, $50, $100 Visa/Amex/MC cards will get the 4x points during the promotion. Even the $5.95 load fee gets 4x points.

I have quite a bit of knowledge on this game, so feel free to ask any questions.

And side point regarding the Amex Blue Cash Preferred 6% card. The $6,000 limit goes into effect on your account renewal date in 2013.

So, I buy a $500 Visa GC and pay $506 at the counter, I get 2024 points?

Last time when they did this someone specifically mentioned that it doesnt work with Visa/MC gift cards...

Does this also apply to Turkey Hill stores (since they're owned by Kroger)?

We have no Kroger in Utah.. It's all Smiths here.. Every time Kroger does this promo, Smiths has it too.. I assume the same for you too..

Could you elaborate on the Visa/Amex/MC cards? What they look like, etc? I wasn't aware some of these work. If the max is the $100 card then it probably isn't work the $6 fee.

I know that Smith's stores in Utah are a part of Kroger. Are they participating in it? I checked online and it's only showing 2x points instead of 4x.

In the Dallas market we get 4x points on the AMX/MC/Visa fixed load cards. The viariable cards only earn 1 point per dollar.

So what is I use say $1 on a credit card with extended warranty protection and the rest in gift cards. Will it then get the protection?

LOL.. No way.. Most of the CC would have mentioned in their terms that you must have paid fully with their CC..

What's the highest denomination for those? I think it is $100. So, $6 fee for 400 points (.4 x 35 = $14) nets $8. Not worth the hassle IMHO.
