Does Dicks run the NICS check right at midnight or do they make you come back the next day? The NICS center IS open until 1AM...

I would imagine they do an online NCIS check, seeing as they are a big box retailer I'd imagine that's how they do it. Usually the only time they would phone in would be if the online system was down. Should get a proceed or a hold within a matter of seconds.
That being said, however, I haven't had the experience of purchasing a gun from Dick's but have from other retailers so I am only speaking from that experience. |

It really depends on where you live and how your county and state does the background checks. When i live in Las Vegas the background checks had to be run through the police department which sucked because the police department required a 25 dollar fee. Where i live now in florida, the county has an office that the background check go through. So the ncis check can only be done when that county office is open. It is really stupid.
If you have questions about how your locality handles the ncis check, call your local dicks up and ask them. If your county and or state is cool, dicks will deal with the ncis center directly. |

Yeah, I've bought boatloads of firearms and never had a problem, even from Dicks, and have my Concealed Carry license, but the time just scares me. Some retailers pull "no firearm sales after XX:XX" nonsense to...Prevent crime? Yeah, I'm sure that works. I just hope they make an exception for BF because the Dicks I live buy is quite a drive. If I had to make 2 trips the savings would drop quickly. :/
Edit: Darn, I just called them. You DO have to go back the next day. It SHOULD be an e-check, but I guess Dicks is not up with the times. Oh well. I suppose it is still a deal though. Last edited by Darthgamer138; 11-16-2012 at 02:42 PM.. |

Your cheapest ammo caliber will be .223. You can get this in factory loads, or military surplus. The .308 is readily available, however, those rounds cost about 30-40% more than the .223, but they also pack a much bigger punch out to 800 yards. If you are just looking for cheap target practice, the .223 should suffice. That round will be highly accurate out past 200 yards if you ever get a chance, as will all the other calibers too. If you are just limiting to 100 yards though, you may want to consider a cheap .22 rifle. Talk about cheap ammo! Can shoot all day and not put a hole in your wallet, relatively speaking. |

I was in Dicks last night, and they were offering the ruger 10/22 at the black Friday price of 179.98 for pre-order. They also had the Remington 870 express for the black Friday sale price in stock. All gun safes were available for pre-order as well at the black Friday prices.
There might be more available now, but that was what I noticed when I was looking around. |

had a less than satisfying experience at dick's in austin. was 11th in line and didn't get to the front of the line til 1:15am. when we got there the guy in front of me had just bought the last varmint .308 (they had 9 of them, 9 of the 10 in front of me bought one, oh well) but worst of all they carried only one maverick model 88, a 20 ga, and it was a youth. the guy behind the counter should've gone down the line seeing who wanted what to make sure there was inventory. could've prevented a lot of frustration as the line behind me was pretty long and there were others who wanted the same.

I was first in line at Dicks. Got the. 308 R700. They called NICS within 10 minutes and they were put on hold for 15 minutes, and who knows how long they would have stayed on hold. Apparently, NICS was swamped, and even their system overloaded or malfunctioned later in the morning. They got my background check through at about 730 am finally.
