essentially this is a huge discount at columbia's store, with the extra step of buying a $50 card to use in the process.

the run-down:

-so i bought a $50 card from this site
-they gave me a single-use access code to get in to the columbia friends and family program (www.columbia.com/friends) where most things seemed to be discounted by about 50%
-I used the $50 columbia gift card i just purchased to cover the first $50 of my order and i paid the remaining $13.50 or so.
-crossed my fingers before my new gear arrives before the next winter storm... :-P

columbia has a little explanation on the program here: http://www.columbia.com/friends. This is also where you put in the single-use code to gain access to the special prices.

some nice timing... i had plenty of gear that needed replacing after some serious abuse in some post-hurricane Sandy cleanup. The only downside to this is that you can only place one order with this one friends and family code... i went to go back in and browse some more and then realized that the prices went back to normal... so make sure you get everything you and the family need in one sweep!

Does anyone know if the discount applies to only regular priced items or does the discount work on items in the outlet section of the site

is listed as $215. i almost ordered it in black but i stopped myself. now i'm regretting it :-(

(obviously it's not discounted as deeply because it is already being sold at a huge discount)

ahhh crap, careful that you don't let your cart expire after entering in your code ... I was waiting for my GF to check on some items and then it expired, I went through to check out again and now my $50 egiftcard says it does not have any funds on it, awwwwwwww crap.

EDIT : tried calling the egiftcard company, no luck .. said they'd call me in 24-48 hours.

EDIT 2 : Called Columbia, they fixed it, they said it happens occasionally, but were able to reload the giftcard for me after verifying it indeed was not used.

I wish they had their college stuff online
