Infinity Primus P363 Floorstanding speaker $110 + shipping at Fry's

very nice speakers and unbeatable price. Had the 360s for a while and these are very very heavy for their size. They, in my opinion lack good highs but provide enough lows that you can almost get away with not having a sub.

VERY good speakers for the price...

I have the Primus PC351 center channel and really like it. It produces the most voice quality of any centers I auditioned. I'm looking forward to receiving these. Will be replacing a pair of Klipsch synergy F-1's.

I have the polk 70s and the infinity beta 40s in my basement. I realize they aren't the exact same as what's listed here, but fairly close (the 40s appear to be an ancestor to the primus 363s).

The polks are much brighter. My ears get tired quicker from listening to them w/o some EQ on those channels. I've had the betas for probably eight years now and they still impress.

I would check out avsfourms for other (better?) info, but in the end, either one will probably sound great.

I got my set of Infinity Primus P363 on a similar sale months ago. I had to drive 100 miles to Austin as there is no Fry's in San Antonio. The speakers were worth it! Let me tell you that better speakers exist. If I had a $1000 burning a hole in my pocket, I'd buy a kit of high-end MTM speakers using Dayton or Usher woofers from parts-express.com, but I can't right now. However, for the price of about $220 (plus a gas tank, I guess), there is NOTHING that can touch these speakers. Not even close.

I can tell you some of my impressions, for future record.

First the bad things. These speakers look much better with the grille on. The woofers and tweeters look kind of blingy, too plastic without the grille (This has _always_ been a feature of Infinity speakers, even in car audio). You need a good a receiver with a good amplifier to drive these speakers. First of all, tests show that the impedance of these speakers is more like 4ohm instead of 8ohm. So a cheap 8ohm receiver could have problems powering these. Also, the sensitivity does not seem to be very good. (the review on audioholics says that the sensitivity spec is overstated by at least 3dB). I need to set my receiver's volume knob to -10dB to fill a large living room with sound. The speakers will get there, but not much on top of it (don't expect club sound from these) To tell the truth, I don't know if the issue is with receiver or the speakers. The receiver is a HK AVR1565 (from the same company, bought from Fry's on a similar sale at $200). This is just an entry level Harman receiver.

Now the good. With the grille on the speakers look good, and fairly small for what they can do. The sound is enjoyable and lively. These speakers are able to fill a large living room with sound without an audible strain. Mid-range is clear and smooth until the speaker is being driven very hard. Bass is the best feature. The midbass as well as the lower frequencies are pretty strong. The mid-range is a little "warm", and some male vocals on TV may sound "bassy". I don't know if this is because the speakers have a bass boost or whether I am just not used to watch TV with a speaker that can actually reproduce low frequencies. They play near flat down to about 50Hz or so, which is the tuning frequency of the port. Bass sounds accurate and certainly not sloppy or washed out. 9 out of 10 songs, I feel like I don't need to add a subwoofer. Power handling in bass frequencies is pretty good. The woofers seem to have pretty stiff suspension. I couldn't get them to bottom out when driven hard, even with no high pass filter. Treble is clear, detailed, bright, perhaps a little too much so.

I don't do the audiophile thing where you apparently have enough time to find a sweet spot, sit, and listen for hours trying to see if the speakers can reproduce the sound of guitar string being plucked or the singer's breath. I needed a budget TV speaker that can effortlessly fill with sound a HUGE living room and a kitchen as I move around doing my business. These speakers have certainly delivered this.
