Restrict Hard Drive
Is there any way to restrict hard drive in XP. I don't want my guest account to save any document.EDIT : Anyone know that would do the same thing for Win 7. Last edited by Raju; 11-19-2012 at 06:50 PM.. |

It's not easy but doable.
Go to My Computer. Click on Tools menu and go to Folder Options. Scroll down to the bottom and uncheck "Use simple file sharing (recommended)" Now, in My computer, right click on the C: drive and go to Properties. Go to the Security tab. What you want to do is make sure the User group is added. If not, add it. If there is an Everyone group, remove it. The permissions you want to give the User group is just Read, Read & Execute, List folder contents. (if you don't want the Guest account running any programs at all, remove Read & Execute). Click the Advanced button to the bottom right of this window. On the Permissions tab, click the "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" Click OK Click Apply and OK. Now, the Guest account, which is in the Users group, will be able to read and see folders, but will not be able to write to any of them. Any Administrator or System groups should be able to do what they have to do, but without the Everyone group to be all encompassing, then each group needs to be set up manually with its permissions. Not too difficult if you're dealing with Administrator and User groups only. |

You could also sandbox the guest login. They could install viruses and delete the system32 folder and a reboot puts it back the way it previously was. Basically it makes the whole file system virtual in essence. They think they are making changes but really aren't.

A heartless hand on my shoulder, a push and it's over
Alabaster crashes down (six months is a long time) I tried living in the real world instead of a shell But before I began... I was bored before I even began |

I think this works best in my case. I was able to hide C and all the other drivers, and tried saving document, but wasn't able to. The only place I was able to save the document was on Desktop. I did saw an option saying "Prevent users from saving files to the desktop" under Windows restrictions, but for some reason it didn't work for me. Even though I had that check I was still able to save the document. |

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

Do u know if something similar works on Win 7? |

A better question might be what does the user of the kiosk type computer actually need to be able to do (programs/activities, do they even need access to windows explorer at all). There may be other ways of locking the machine down severely that would meet your needs. |

You can use an alternate windows shell instead of windows explorer (like internet explorer), apply security policies and other customization to internet explorer [microsoft.com], apply software restriction policies and prevent them from doing most things they shouldn't (including launching windows explorer). If you really want to completely lock it down with minimal effort tools like deep freeze are great, but in many cases adequate results can be obtained freely but require more time and effort. Basically this: http://www.ehow.com/how_7503804_b.. What is the specific environment the computer will be placed in? Will it be used for anything else (authenticated users / anything secure)? Even with programs like deep freeze, it's also good idea to make other modifications to security policies etc. Last edited by jkee; 11-19-2012 at 10:29 PM.. |
