Don't let this discourage you from buying if you need something. I'm extremely pleased with a 200Mbps powerline adapter kit I purchased for family members a few years ago. Really cool technology. Even if the 500Mbps adapters can't truly provide that speed, they probably provide a more stable and consistent connection. Especially if you're trying to power through a breaker box or running on older home wiring. |

Real world speeds on 500Mbps adapters average about 80Mbps, hence the manufacturers only put 10/100 jacks on them.

Thanks for the replies guys
In thinking that a performance under 500Mbps is OK: Please review my reasoning 1) I will only be using this to connect an older laptop that is out if the wireless range. I will be surfing the web mostly and according to speedtest.net my Internet speed is no where near 500Mbps or even 200Mbps. 2) I assume benefit of these speeds(500 or 200Mbps) would be realized via in network transfers? I.e. streaming movies from my network? And not via web activity (unless you have a very fast web service?) Please let me know if my assumptions/understanding of this is incorrect Thank you in advance! |

My friend got some at BestBuy for $50 Actiontec Brand. A nice alternative to buy.com because you can easily return them if they don't work.

Here an idea for you: If you've got an extra router sitting around you can turn off DHCP, set the ip address of your primary router as the gateway and then connect that extra router to your second adapter, That extra router will then essentially be plugged directly into the primary router (via your home wiring) and provide your laptop with a full power wireless signal anywhere in your home. Works wonderfully for me. |
