End of the year and waived health insurance options with employer for 2013
Open enrollment period came again with our employer and we all got a nice surprise. All the rates in pretty much every tier went up another $100. Since I'm covering myself and my domestic partner, it's $200 more out of my pocket each month.
After much thought and since this year we've pretty much played catch up with the doc visits since neither of us made many doc visits last year, I've decided to waive my health insurance options for 2013 and just keep my dental plan which is about $8. One of my main factors in deciding this was mainly that we are both two healthy individuals and take care of ourselves pretty adequately. Eat right and don't smoke or drink much. Occasionally, I'll have one of my sugar fests but nowhere close to what it used to be years ago.
I know of the risks I'm taking not getting it, but I looked it as we'll have no reason to really make any doc visits. Every reason we've went to one this year was for mainly checkups or minor things that was pretty much avoidable. With the money I'm saving, I'm fine tuning my finances so that more can be put towards my IRA Roth and 401k.
Now, I do have a backup plan. My fiance will be eligible for health benefits in a few weeks, if we do change our mind and her plans fit close to what I had with my employer, then we might end up going with that.
Is there anything anyone can recommend we do before our currently health benefits end on the 31st? We both maxed out our HSA funds and I was stupid not to put any money in FSA but I've learned my lesson.
I've already made dentist appointments for both of us and a trip to the dermatologist for my significant other for a checkup on something minor.
Any other recommendations anyone can make? Thanks.
