It could, but not sure what the point would be. The main draw of this drive vs. another 500gb is the Hybrid SSD cache.

Old school method that might work once for you, but it is legit. It's intended as a last resort to just quickly recover data, not a long-term solution or repair. I recall reading about this years and years ago, but never got around to trying it on the one dead drive I've had out of many. (Of course, I only buy WD, so no problems like many, many, many Seagate owners.)

These drives are perfect for Steam/Origin gaming drives. Load up your entire game library on them. As long as you typically play a few of these at a time, the smart caching will work its best.

Heard a lot of issues with this one failing after a couple months and having poor firmware. Should I hold out for the 750 GB version?

Very tempting. If only the 750gb version was 75$ or so.

I've been running this drive in an older Dell E1505 laptop for a year now with Windows 7 and no problems. Great Price and I would totally buy this again!. I also have a 2TB Seagate GoFlex external drive that I've had no problems with.Of course you hear the complaints more than those with no problems. That's just the way it goes.

In for one. Need one for the new laptop in January so I can get faster boot times, but not paying twice for the 750GB one.

I've got one of these installed in my old C2D generation HP DV6 laptop. Paid just over $100 for it a while back (~year or so) when it wasn't on sale.

I did a fresh Win7 install on the drive and I haven't had any issues out of it. Boot ties were improved, but a lot of that came from the fresh install most likely.

All in all I was happy with buying one at that price, if I needed another one I'd buy it again.

DO NOT BUY! This is 2.5 for laptops you are looking for 3.5 for desktops. Both will work but this isn't as cheap as a 3.5

So? I don't know where that matters for anything. Also, thats what non SSD drives are capped at anyway. MS arbitrarily decided that any form of spinning drive can't go above 5.9, even if its a 10k velociraptor fast one.

Plus, the WEI is often inaccurate. I've had multiple ssds (yes they are fast and non crappy) and windows refuses to list any at more than 5.9. If you google you'll find this is actually not uncommon, and none of the many possible solutions seem to work for me. In fact, one of the things I came across suggest that the drive WEI requires a large contiguous space to test, and won't run properly unless an SSD has been defragged... which is a very bad thing to do on a SSD. Everything I've come across suggests that the WEI is a very poorly designed test, especially the drive part of it.

I doubt anything will ever require a windows drive score of over 5.9, because they'd be restricting the userbase to SSD only.
