that seems like way too much money for a box with no hdds in it. pretty sure i could build a small cube pc, with space for 4+ drives, for this price or less. with at the very least 1 drive included.

I'm looking to get some opinions. I've seen this NAS devices a few times on slickdeal, and I think I understand why they're useful. Could you not accomplish the same thing if you have an old computer available? Basically, attach the old computer to your LAN, throw some harddrives on it, and you're good right? Network attached storage.

I guess the NAS is smaller than a computer. And the NAS consumes less power. Are those the only advantages of the NAS over a spare computer you have laying around?

For a business, I see the appeal. Each computer is a license and maintenance. But for home, an old box or a purchased cheap box seems like a better option.

your regular old computer may not support certain raid like raid 5.

for home use, it is really a bit overkill. nas and san was supposed be used for datacenter or diskless systems where all the information are stored in a centralized location. therefore max iops, fault recovery, high availability array like RAID were used. for you home use you better off with router with USB port.

that said, go with N40L which can be had for 180 dollars.

I only have media streaming needs - so I have a 1 TB HD connected to router and is accessible to all PC's on the network for streaming and file storage.

The extra bells and whistles NAS offers sounds sexy, but also sound like a headache to set up. So the router option will work for me until I start running out of space.

I think the same or similar system was posted on SD . If I remember correct, it was Fry's for $199 after $100 rebate ..
