Actually they differ on how they can legally define a KB (1000 bytes or 1024 bytes). kil·o·byte (kl-bt) n. Abbr. K or KB 1. A unit of computer memory or data storage capacity equal to 1,024 bytes. 2. One thousand bytes. Kilo means a thousand but generally a KB is referred to as 2 to the 10th power bytes = 1024 bytes. Computer purists use 1024, advertising people use 1000 as it means they can say they are offering more than they really are. It is almost universally accepted now that HW drive manufacturers use the 1000 byte definition. |
