Thread Details

Sportsman's Guide has 2,500 rounds of 22LR Thunderbolts for $99.97, shipped, using code SH805 (free shipping over $75). SG also has 5,000 rounds for $197.97.

This cheap, plinking ammo is 4 cents a round from SG, the same price as my Wally World with tax, but they're always sold out of 22LR Thunderbolts or Goldies.

Same price, save fuel...just wait a week for delivery. No brainer for me.

For those of you with a SG membership I'm sure you'll save even more.

I'm usually at Wally anyway, and they stock Federal bulk in 550 rounds/box for $19.97. With tax, it's still cheaper per round at my Wally. That's assuming I don't make a special trip just for ammo (extra cost in gas).

Though, convenience-wise (to avoid Wally) makes this post a decent deal.

I'm not sure how these Thunderbolt (40gr) compare to Federal [walmart.com] (36gr) that I bought today.

A bit heavier. They shoot fine in my Ruger 10/22 and Sig Mosquito.

If you're willing to wait the 2-3 weeks for the backorder. Cabelas has 2100 rounds of Federal 22LR for $84.99 each. If you buy 2 and use the free shipping over $99 coupon 2GIFTS it comes out to $169.98 (assuming no tax.) Also comes to about 4 cents a round plus you'll get two dry storage boxes.

If you don't mind backorder, you can get 3150 rds of the Federal from Brownells, there are free shipping codes over $100 out there, and for me in Colorado I don't have to pay tax. Comes out to 3.4 cents per round

There's this here [cabelas.com] which is the same thing but with metal cans, and in stock. I don't know why the set with the plastic cans is normally more expensive....

You have a link for the Federal rounds? I couldn't find anything that came to 3150 rds with ammo cans

Do they ship the ammo in the cans with a UPS sticker on the can itself or do they box it up? I dont want Mr UPS man to see the can. A little blue catridge ord sticker on a box is better then a metal ammo can with full descrtion.

my local walmart carries the 375 boxes for $11.47, which comes out to be 0.0306/round vs 0.0363/round w/ the 550 box. so if you calc it out, the 375 boxes come out to be $16.82 for 550, $3.15 cheaper than the 550 box!

bulk does not always equal better prices in the specific case of federal bulk .22 LR ammo at walmart!

My 10/22's didn't like the 40gr thunderbolt ammo vey much. They run better on the bulk Federal 36gr ammo. You have to try out different brands/types of ammo to see what your gun prefers.

I did the 500 rounds of 9mm plus ammo can deal. Everything came in one cardboard box. Inside the box, the ammo was packed separate from the can.

Very true. I ended up polishing the feed ramps on my 10/22 and Sig Mosquito to make them work consistently with the cheaper bulk 22LR ammo.

I used my Dremel with the hard felt polishing cone.
