Eligible for ATT upgrade? Get a FREE Samsung Galaxy S3 16GB + tax YMMV/REQUEST

I was able to get a free Samsung Galaxy S3 16GB (choice of Red, Blue, White) from ATT today. You have to be eligible for an upgrade for it to work. If you are within a year of your contract expiring and you are a non-iphone owner, you can convince ATT to let you upgrade early.

What you do is call their retention department and tell them you are thinking of leaving to get a free S3 from T-Mobiles offer (T-Mobile.com) they are having today and tomorrow. You can also tell them your phone is malfunctioning or messing up and you need a new phone ASAP. The CSR was nice and understood and said he could work out a deal with me. He was able to discount the price of the phone to $175 then made a deal with me to discount my monthly bill $30 for the next 6 months essentially putting me at $-5. After tax and shipping it was only $40 net cost (high CA luxury tax). I also had him waive the upgrade fee of $36. Was charged $10 for shipping which he wouldn't budge on but you might have better luck.

It actually worked better for me to pay the price of the phone now and get a $30 statement credit the next 6 months since I'm trying to get to $1k on my NFL Mastercard which would trigger my $400 statement credit.

exactly. talking to AT&T for 30 minutes sure beats waiting in a black friday line for the 96 cent deal at Sam's Club

I did something pretty similar over yesterday and today. I have been out of contract for about 2 months. So I called yesterday citing T-mobile's offer. They worked some deals, but nothing super sweet. I called back today (after I missed their call back). And after an hour on the phone, here is what I got:

So they marked down the phone $50 From $200 to $150
Then they knocked $20 off my bill for the next 6 months. After that I have a lifetime $10 discount (this is namely a discount on my unlimited text messaging)
They waived the upgrade fee - $36 (which is a lame charge BTW)
My girl did waive shipping and upgraded it to expedited shipping
I was also able to get on my alumni center FAN and get an additional 15% off on my bill (this was a side deal)

But the kicker? They paid my December bill!!!! On the iPhone plan that was $101 after taxes!!!

In the end, once I got some discounts on my plan, I was pretty happy - I have been paying full price on AT&T for way too long. Paying my bill? Too much.

How are you guys getting this??? I called the retention department 3 times yesterday and once this morning; the maximum they are coming down to is: $174.99 - each of them specified exactly the same; not even any variations in what they said; they've been pretty consistent.

How are you guys getting this? I asked them in the same way "can you please let me know the procedure to terminate my contract?"

They explained everything, asked me the reason and they come up with stating the maximum they can offer is the phone for $174.99.

By the way - my contract ends up on Jan 15 and I hold an iPhone 4 (is that what the killer is???)

The second time i had spoke to retention CSR he told me they dont get much authorities on pricing of devices, but can work out plans etc.. i have unlimited data which is wht i need and didnt really need any plan modifications..but i have heard of people getting device thru retention too..so he probably just bluffed me
