Thank you so much for this! I just got off the phone with them and they said i'll get a call within 72 hrs (not including weekends). I'm getting it for FREE!! YES!
the phone is actually for the secondary line. contract is up in feb. at first, she said that it would cost $199 and i asked if there was a better deal she could get me. she said she would transfer me to the retention department. she never did. instead, she said her supervisor would let me get it for free and they filed it as an urgent case. i only spent about 30 mins. on the phone (first try too!) hopefully i won't have to pay for activation or shipping. if i do, then no biggie. beats waiting in line on BF. best deal i've seen on this phone was at Sam's club, which is about 40 minutes from my house.
I may have posted this yesterday, I don't remember. I got the offer for a complete free GS3, but now I'm hesitant. I may be able to get a better phone for cheaper heading into the new year. I've had an iphone 4 for a couple years now and have no reason to jump ship NOW as i'm still working.
the lady called me back about 40min after i got off the phone with her. she said she wanted me to "be taken cared of for the holidays". she went ahead and shipped the phone out. i already got the order number. the only one they had in stock was the pebble blue. she waived the shipping so all i have to do is pay for the activation.
On the phone now.I told CS I wanted to upgrade and she said we could work something out. She wanted to charge me $100 for the phone but I said no, my friends had called and got the phone for free and I want it for free as well. She said she couldn't do it but would waive activation fee and shipping fee and I would have to pay $100. I said what if I want to cancel with ATT? She said I can't offer you what they will offer you but I can transfer you to that dept. I said ok and am on hold now.
Update: I argued a bit about my cell not working properly since the storm so she credited my account $165. Not too bad. Thanks OP

now I will dial 611, then what numbers do I put after that?
I tried upgrade line and got indian woman who has no clue
Call 611, then once you confirm you number you hit 7 for "other" and then I believe it is 5 for "cancel service". This will send you to a level 1 rep and tell them you are thinking about cancelling and they should transfer you to the next level in retention. It was there I got my deal. Obviously, YMMV and others have had better luck talking to Customer Care instead of Retention
Worked like a charm. Only on the phone for 10 minutes. Called 611, went through the prompts for upgrade department, spoke w/ CSR, they spoke w/ manager, it got approved. Keep in mind: I've been w/ AT&T for 10+ years, I am an iPhone user, and in very good standing w/ them.
Phone was free not via a statement credit. Shipping was waived. Upgrade fee was waived as well.
